Little Lion Man

When: Listening to the song of the same name by Mumford and Sons, which I encourage you to listen to. :)

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or the Mumford and Sons song.

A/N This is NOT a song fic. However, it is based on the amazing song of the same name by Mumford and Sons. Severus Snape was never the man he could be, he could have been a little lion man, but instead he became a snivelling snake, what was in his heart was so much more. And underneath it all, beat the brave heart of a lion man.

Severus Snape had to live with all of his mistakes. In fact, with the heavy weight of his screw-ups on his shoulders, he was surprised he lived as long as he did.

He could remember every little fuck up he'd ever had. And every single one of them made him a different man. Was it sad that the goodness in his heart was never brought into the open?

Snape never thought so. Not until his last moments when he looked upon Harry Potter with tears in his eyes and the annoyed voice inside his own head chided him...

" Weep for yourself, my man, you'll never be what was in your heart."

And as he lay dying, other voices filled his head...like Lily when she confronted him about being a Death Eater.

He could recall the exact amount of disgust in her voice when she said," You're not the brave Sev I used to know..."

And his inner voice agreed with her all too readily," Weep, little lion man, you're not as brave as you were at the start."

Of course, Snape had ignored that voice, it was like having an annoying little Gryffindor living in the back of his brain, shouting nonsense in his ears.

So instead, Snape focused on fixing all the problems in his life. All the problems his own head made up for him, for of course, they weren't nearly as bad as they seemed.

Except for when he lost Lily. That problem had been all too real.

Even the Gryffindor voice had felt the pain at that and like Gryffindors tend do, it stupidly blamed itself with words like," But it was not your fault, but mine...and it was your heart on the line. I really fucked it up this time."

The voice spoke again when Lily's son entered Hogwarts. Snape hated him instantly. He was just like his father.

The passionate voice never once disagreed, until Snape tried to take out his anger on the boy.

Then the voice blew up, yelling in his ear," Tremble little lion man, you'll never settle any of you scores."

Snape never did settle his 'scores,' and he never decided whether or not that was a bad thing.

And when Harry faced Voldemort once again as an eleven year old boy, it was Snape who saved him.

It was Snape who helped him defeat Voldemort, but when Severus tried to revel in this, the voice mocked him," Your grace is wasted in your face, your boldness stands alone among the wreck."

And it would be true until his death. No one ever saw the goodness of Severus Snape...not even Snape himself.

Not until the last time the voice spoke to him," Do not weep little lion man, you are braver than you were before." That was when Snape knew the truth.

The voice wasn't the enemy in his head...it was his voice. He had always been the Gryffindor...he'd always been and would always be a lion man.

A/N Short and Sweet, as I intended. A bit odd though...please review :)
