It was the middle of the night. The moon had already set, but the stars shone on brightly above the treetops. The entire jungle was relatively quiet; everything except the nocturnal animals were sound asleep. But just then, a baby started crying, her shrieking wails disrupting the silence. Her mother scooped her up, rocking the infant back and forth, trying to calm the screaming babe.

"Shh…" Danielle whispered softly. "Calm down little one. It's ok. Everything is ok. There's no point in crying. Shh…Alex…Shh…" But little Alex's cries could not be silenced. "It's ok, baby, it's ok. Why do you cry baby? It's ok. Mommy's here." Nothing Danielle said seemed to soothe the baby. But then she began to sing.

"La mer
Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs"

Her voice was soft and soothing, and finally, the baby started to calm down. Danielle continued to sing.

"A des reflets d'argent
La mer
Des reflets changeants
Sous la pluie"

Alex's cries were reduced to whimpers.

"La mer
Au ciel d'été confond
Ses blancs moutons
Avec les anges si purs"

The infant sniffled, now silent, and listened to her mother sing.

"La mer,
bergère d'azur infinie.
Voyez
Près des étangs
Ces grands roseaux mouillés.
Voyez
Ces oiseaux blancs
Et ces maisons rouillées."

Alex opened her mouth in a big yawn. Her eyes began to close, and soon she was asleep. But still, Danielle sang on.

"La mer
Les a bercés
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
La mer
A bercé mon cœur pour la vie."

When she finished the song, Danielle smiled down at her baby girl. "Sleep, little child. Sleep in peace." After leaning down and placing a soft kiss on Alex's forehead, she herself curled up next to her child and drifted off to sleep.
