Marry Me, Jojo
Rifiuto: Non Miriena
Summary: "Marry me, Jojo." He'd asked her this question once before, and she'd hesitated. Now, he was asking her again. What I hope happens with tonight's series finale in regards to Jo and Zane.
"We're really leaving. We have no choice but to leave."
Zane wrapped an arm around her waist. Their small group sat together at Cafe Diem, discussing their options. Carter and Allison were considering Seattle. Fargo was looking at going back east. As for Jo and Zane... well, they hadn't considered going anywhere together, but they had considered the long distance.
It didn't sound like it would work out well.
Jo turned to him; Zane was unusually quiet, lost in his thoughts.
He ran his hand up and down her back, tracing the outline of her spine as he listened to the others talk. He'd decided on what he was about to do weeks ago, and now, he just needed to muster the courage. Taking a deep breath, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the trinket, squeezing it quickly, before reaching up and sliding it across the table towards Jo.
She didn't notice, because she was engrossed in conversation with Allison, until she turned back to pick up her cup. And then her eyes slid to the ring before her; the ring that had caused so much heartache. Her breath caught, and slowly, she looked up into Zane's bright blue eyes.
"Zane, what-"
He picked the ring up, looking at it. "Do you know how I got this ring, Jo?" She shook her head. "My grandfather gave it to my grandmother not long before he went to fight in Europe. He asked her to wait for him; she did. He was sent home from war in nineteen-forty-two, not long after being injured. My grandmother was sent over to be a nurse on the front not long before he returned home. When she returned from nursing, she found him in hospital, suffering from depression, because he thought she'd run off with another man.
When she found him, she showed him the ring- on a gold chain around her neck- and told him she'd waited, even when she went over to help. They were married in nineteen-forty-five, the day the war ended. She wore this ring on a chain around her neck until the day she died. When we cleaned out her house, I found it in the box with a note addressed to me. She... she told me to give it to the girl who made me weak in the knees, who... made my head spin and who made every day worth living."
He took her hand, slipping it on her finger, as the whole cafe went quiet.
"I knew it well enough to give it to you once. And I know it well enough to give it to you again. It always belonged to you, Jo." He got out of his seat, and knelt before her. "I love you, Jo. I know, that... someday, we'll be able to share our own love story with our grandkids. I can't guarantee that it'll be as memorable, but it'll be ours."
"Zane-"
He took a deep breath, speaking the three words that had made her heart stop in the previous time.
"Marry me, Jojo."
She looked down at the ring on her finger, before removing it. Zane's face fell, and Allison cried out in shock. After a moment, she pulled the gold chain from her pocket and slipped it through the ring before clasping it around her neck. Then, she pulled Zane to his feet and stood, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Our love story will be just as memorable. Because it's ours." She said, kissing him. He pulled away minutes later, looking into her eyes.
"So is that a yes or-" She smiled at him, kissing him again. When she pulled away, she whispered,
"Yes."
