Prologue: Magnum Opus
"Magnum opus from the Latin meaning 'great work', refers to the largest, and perhaps the best, greatest, most popular, or most renowned achievement of a writer, artist, composer or craftsman."
-Wikipedia
The room was dark, with the only light coming from the open window behind the wooden desk. The walls were lined with books, as the room was consisted of large elegant furniture. The wooden desk faced the door, with two chairs that stood in front of it. Clearly the room was meant as a study or office.
The room held two occupants.
One sat in the large chair to the right of the desk. The man sat elegantly with his legs crossed, his cheek resting on his right hand. He was quite tall, with long legs, dressed in an all-black suit and black leather boots, with a yellow polo shirt and blue necktie. An orange band was wrapped around the base of his black fedora. The hat created a shadow over the man's face, and framed his large curled sideburns.
"What do you plan to do?" He asked the other.
The second man was also tall, and was clearly older than the first. He was standing in front of the window, yet the only thing that could be seen was the grey suit, and wild grey hair.
"What am I going to do?" The grey haired man mused, voice twinkling with mirth.
"You know perfectly well I was talking about the next three." Instead of taking offence in the fact that the other did not even turn around to acknowledge him, the other replied calmly.
"Well, it seems that the first one was chosen at the end of last year." The grey haired one said.
"Like always." The other countered, a slight hint of annoyance creeping into his tone.
"The second one was chosen at the same time as the first." The older man replied slightly amused at having irritated the static man.
"What about the last?" The question lead to silence as the fedora wearing man's sharp black eyes landed on the ring that sat innocently on top of the wooden desk.
The ring glistened, as small rays of sunlight hit the clear topaz in the middle.
"He had already picked his successor as soon as he gained his throne." The older man replied softly.
"Always prepared, that one." The other acknowledged ripping his gaze away from the ring back to the older man.
"The question is, did he pick the right one?" The black suited man enquired, the silent question clearly heard in his voice, as was the doubt. "The other two are worthy and perfect for the roles, but what about the other? After all, you can't have two ideal leaders and a flawed one, for a perfect kingdom."
The grey haired man didn't bother to correct the other as he as he replied with a simple statement. "You tell me."
As soon as the words left the other's mouth the sound of 'La Campanella' drifted through the window, the sound coming from the piano hall located just across the study. Coincidently, the grey haired man had watched the pianist since he arrived in the piano hall, through his window.
The sound was beautiful and seemed to add life to the dark office, as it rang throughout the room.
The other man in tilted his fedora down, hiding the small, almost unnoticeable smile that graced his lips. "It would seem so."
So I hope you review and tell me what you think!
