It was after midnight when Jack awoke. He yawned and draped his arm over an empty space, expecting someone to be sleeping there. He thought they probably went to get a drink or something, and was about to fall back asleep when he heard the faint sound of... music?
Not pop music, though, thank goodness. Jack listened closely, and he was sure it was the sound of a piano.
With every ounce of effort he had in his body, Jack hauled himself out of his bed, pulled on his pants and hoodie and quietly tread downstairs. The music was coming from the sitting room. Oh, right, Jack remembered. I got him a piano last Christmas, didn't I?
He put his ear to the door. There was a voice now, singing along to the tune. It was a lovely voice, too. Jack didn't know many songs though, so he couldn't tell which one was being played.
Wait a minute. A voice?
Jack gently opened the door to the sitting room. Luckily the player couldn't see him, because of the piano facing the opposite way. He quietly listened to the song, and the sweet sound of Sandy's voice.
When the little Guardian had finished, Jack put a hand on his shoulder which made Sandy jump out of his skin.
"Didn't know you could sing like that, Sandy." Jack chuckled as Sandy's face turned a vivid gold in embarrassment. He then folded his arms and gave Jack an angry look, symbols flashing above his head.
Why did you sneak up me? it read.
Jack's chuckling turned into laughter. "Maybe you shouldn't be playing piano at one in the morning!"
Sandy huffed. Couldn't sleep! Didn't think you would hear. You kept snoring.
Jack bent down to meet Sandy eye-to-eye, and began playing with the other's golden hair. "How come you don't speak? You have a really nice voice."
Sandy blushed again and smiled awkwardly. Don't know. Stopped using it. Don't really want any children to wake up, just lucky none of them did.
"I think the whole 'children waking up' thing is a myth. Think about how many times you've sneezed." Jack grinned at this. Sandy did sneeze alot. It was probably the dreamsand. "Did any kids wake up?"
Guess not. Sandy grinned. He then cleared his throat, and out came a quiet voice. "Um," he started, but trailed off. "Um..."
Jack smiled softly, pulling Sandy into a hug, still caressing his hair. "It's cute," he murmured. "But you don't have to speak if you really don't want to." He kissed Sandy's cheek.
Sandy sighed in relief, and nuzzled deeper into the hug. He grinned as Jack kissed his cheek. He liked being loved. He liked affection. He loved Jack, too. More than anything. Eventually, Sandy dozed off, Jack still holding him.
Jack chuckled softly, and lifted Sandy off of the ground and carried him upstairs to the bedroom. He gently laid him down onto the bed, and Jack climbed in next to him, draping his arm around the little Guardian. He kissed Sandy's forehead again, and fell asleep, smiling.
