Had to change the songfic from "Blue Velvet" into something that I wrote. Something about the rules for the website (yes, mods, I did listen to you). Since I'm an engineer and not a songwriter, I apologize for having to take this down for a time until I wrote a song for it and for the quality of the song. It's just not as good as Blue Velvet, but you can use your imagination ;). I was thinking of this song as a slight duet. It's easy to see where the man and woman sing.

Jack held the picture of Sue and smiled fondly. She was dressed beautifully, smiling up at him as he held her, swaying to music that only they could hear.

There was a beauty about her
That I had never seen before
I held her close
and danced with her
touching cheek to cheek

She seemed to shimmer in front of him. They had finished dinner at the swankiest restaurant that he knew (it took many favors called in to even get through the door), and now they were standing in the park. They were at ease with each other, but there was an undercurrent of urgency about their time. Desperation, almost.

He held her as they slowly swayed on the outdoor patio in the park. Jack couldn't help but feel like he held the world in his arms. She was so precious to him, and he loved her more than he had ever thought he could even love a woman. There was not much light on the patio, just from the almost full moon and the starlight. Her hair glinted softly with the light. He had never seen anyone more beautiful...

She was all I ever wanted
The one that I adore
And her beauty inside and out
Marks the one who holds my heart forever more

Her eyes weren't blue, like he had always thought that he wanted. Instead, they were a rich hazel, deep enough to drown in. And drown in them he did, swaying with her to the music of their hearts.

He knew he loved her. He hadn't told her yet, but he would soon. Somehow he had convinced her that this was just friends going out. She opened the door earlier to meet him, dressed in a gorgeous blue velvet dress that fitted her upper body while flaring out below her waist. Now that he held her, it was imprinted on his mind how she looked, on his hands the feel of that lovely dress. He thought he could see love in her eyes.

I clung to the love of him
I tried to let it be known
In all I did
In all I said
I longed for him to see

Sue looked up at him, lost in his eyes, the feeling of him holding her close. She had dreamed of him dancing with her, holding her, caressing her, loving her. Her heart had leapt when he had asked her to dinner and told her to dress formally. She had gasped and protested weakly when she saw where he had taken her for dinner. After they had eaten, he took her breath away by taking her to this place in the park that she didn't even know existed. There was a fire, and a space away, a dance floor for them. He was everything she wanted, and he was in her arms...

But came the day that she left me
To move to a far off land
I lost my chance for love with her
To ask her for her hand

And it broke her heart when he took her home and treated it like any other dinner. It was her last night in DC before she took the job in New York. She would have given it all up if he had asked her, if he had just said he wanted her...But now she had her answer as he walked away. She longed to call after him, but knew it was a lost cause. She resigned herself to heartbreak and work away from those she loved. She couldn't see him every day and not have him...weak though she may be to flee from it.

Now the years have passed me by
No more shall I dance with her
Or hold her close
Or wipe her tears
I'll always rue what I lost

Five years ago...Jack couldn't believe it. They had remained in contact fairly closely (for certain values of 'fairly closely'. Meaning talking every day). He still didn't know why he didn't tell her how he felt. But then, he didn't want to stand in the way of what she wanted. And he knew long distance relationships rarely work. And that she likely didn't even want him anyways...

That was reinforced when Sue had started seeing someone, and Jack backed off quickly. He couldn't stand to see her belong to someone else. By six months, they talked maybe once a month. By the end of the second year, they only talked when Sue came back once a year to visit. Each year she was more aloof, until last visit, three weeks ago, she didn't even talk to him. It broke his heart. He had lost his best friend. And it was his fault.

But he remembered that last night. He lived it most nights in his dreams. Holding her. His Sue. He gently kissed the frame, and put the picture back on the mantle, singing the last verse as tears poured down his cheeks.

She's still all I ever wanted
The one that I still adore
And her beauty inside and out
Marks the one who holds my heart forever more

And her beauty inside and out
Marks the one who holds my heart forever more
