(Oneshot- Itachi x Sakura)

Disclaimer: Naruto doesn't belong to me. Neither do the characters in this one-shot. The only things I own are the fingers that typed this, and the imagination that came up with the scenario.

Summary: Maybe in another reality. Maybe if there paths were not so opposing. Maybe if they had met under different circumstances. Maybe it could have worked.

I've never written ItaSaku before, but it is one of my favourite pairings. If you don't like- don't read.

.

.

Maybe, once upon a time- we could have been together. But our lives are too different. Our goals are too opposing. It could never have worked. Maybe in another time, in another place…

'This can go on no longer.'

.

The rest of the long message she had written down in her mind was shortened to just one short sentence. He was a genius, he'd figure out what she had left unsaid. She dropped the parchment onto the side table where she knew he'd discover it and gathered up the last of her things. Her pink hair bedraggled, her clothes askew from being dropped on the floor and briskly thrown back on.

She knew he must have been sleeping soundly, for she had managed to get dressed and write her departing letter without making him stir. Or perhaps being around him for so long had made her a stealthier ninja- but she begged to differ.

Her heart cried out for her not to do this. Her mind on the other hand…

.

Her mind knew what had to be done.

This, this relationship between them had gone on for far too long.

.

It was better for him…

It was better for her…

And it was better for Naruto, if she left before they went in too deep.

.

Everyone in Konoha had been left in the dark far too long about these medic assignments to a far off village where they only asked for her.

She glanced once more over to her dark haired Adonis. He looked less deadly with his eyes closed and body less tense. Over time, with her around, the dark lines caused by his usual lack of sleep had lessened, but they were still apparent.

She didn't have time to worry over him at the moment.
She had to think about herself first. While she was still in the Akatsuki hideout she was in danger. Itachi would protect her normally, but without him by her side she was an enemy nin. An easy target for them. She had to leave now.
Not even the Akatsuki would be able to catch her if she left now, by daybreak she would be home. Picking up her final instruments, she padded quietly to the door, her heart breaking with every step.

.

Maybe if Naruto wasn't a Bijuu.

Maybe if he hadn't slaughtered his whole clan.

Maybe if they hadn't started this whole liaison.

.

Some part of her heart died as she gently shut the large wooden door of Itachi's quarters for the final time. He'd know she wasn't coming back. He'd also know that he was a weakness for her. And he'd also know that for ninja, weakness was not allowed.

.

It was wrong.

She was foolish.

It was twisted.

She was breaking.

It was treason.

.

Yet she didn't regret a moment of it.
