Into the Wave
He was like a wave that washed her loneliness away.
The first time she met him, the only thought that echoed through her mind was, 'he's too happy'. She hesitated a little before accepting his invitation to a second date and then to a third and so on until on their tenth date when he told her he was being shipped off to a war zone but he would definitely write and keep in touch with her. She was sure that he was lying, that there was no way he would find time to write a letter or even remember her. But he proved her wrong. The first letter arrived a fortnight after he left and as she held that letter in her hand, a wave of happiness passed over her.
The wait for him to come back from Ishval had certainly been long. She would often find herself reading his letters again and again and again. Her friends would constantly tell her that there was a chance that he might not come back and she would constantly tell them to mind their own business. The thought that she might lose him to the war never once crossed her mind because in his letters he always assured her that always bounced back he would definitely return as well. And every time she would read those lines, a wave of relief would pass over her.
His return had been one of the most joyous moments of her life. Holding him and being held by him gave her a sense of comfort, a type of comfort that she had never felt before in her life. When she was with him she saw the world in a different light, in a much happier light. Moving to Central, getting married, giving birth to their beautiful daughter, with him by her side she felt like the happiness could escalate and never fall. As she settled into the routine of waking up to a loving family, a wave of contentment passed over her.
And then in a single moment, he was taken away from her. Forever. During the first few hours after the tragic news was delivered to her, she had been paralyzed. Unable to move or think she sat next to the telephone, staring blankly into space. Over the next few days leading up to the funeral, she often shut herself in her room and wept quietly, not wanting her daughter to see her in such a pathetic state. She was completely broken. The wave didn't bounce back. The wave didn't return. During the funeral, a wave of despair passed over her.
It was only after the funeral that she finally looked Elicia in the eye and conveyed to her the reality of the situation. She held her daughter tightly as the three year old sobbed and cried for her daddy's return. And in that moment Gracia realised that she was not alone, she had not lost her wave. No, she had gained a new wave three years ago. Elicia was her wave.
She was the wave that brought back her strength.
