It's always difficult to watch the ones you care about leave for the first time. Even if you know that they are all grown up and can take care of themselves. And even if you know the separation will not last forever; you can't help but worry for their safety. Especially if you cannot reach them should something happen…
Ten year old Death the Kid stood atop the giant stone wall encircling Death City. Shinigami-Sama watched his son stare out at the hot bare Nevada landscape with a determined look. Today would be the first time Kid would step out of the boundaries of his soul and experience the outside world.
"Do you think I'll find weapon partners while I'm out there?" the striped boy asked turning to his father.
"Perhaps. The world is a big place; it could take some time to find someone willing." Shinigami replied.
"Yes, it is, but I can handle it."
"You never know, Kid, anything could happen."
"You sound worried, father. You know I will always come back."
"I know, a father can't help but worry, right?" Shinigami looked at his son and gave a soft smile. Kid couldn't see it behind the mask but knew it was there. "You should get moving, you're wasting daylight," Kid returned his father's smile and held out his hand to summon Beelzebub.
The demonic skateboard came into being at Kid's feet as he stepped on. "Be back by sundown," Kid started to push off with his left foot, "Don't get into any fights,"
"Bye, Dad." Kid said turning back to smile one last time. The jets on the flying board then turned on and Kid was soon speeding off in to the blazing sun.
"Be safe," Shinigami said quietly to himself as he watched the retreating form of his son disappear from sight.
But you learn to let go, and trust that everything will be alright. Because that way, when you're gone, you know that they'll be alright without you.
