Starlight, Star Bright
After her two failed serious relationships, Rachel was seriously fragile. She was like a tiny baby bird approaching the edge of the nest but not wanting to fall into the abyss. He had to protect her from the world, from herself.
He would do anything for her.
At first, their relationship seemed like nothing more than a ploy to seem happy to the rest of the world. But now, after he had seen her at her worst and had held her while she sobbed pitifully, he loved her more than anything. Of course, he hadn't told her that fact yet, because honestly he didn't want to ruin what they had right now with an emotion that might not be shared by her.
She had loved Finn and that weird Jesse guy that Santana had told him about and he had spent hours researching on the internet. He looked like a prick, honestly and after he had heard what he had done to her he had desired nothing more than to go to UCLA and punch him right in the face. How dare someone make her cry?
But, honestly... who was to say that she wasn't just using him as a solace from the world? She was destined for bigger and better things than Lima, and on the other hand he didn't just want to be a relationship from her past. He wanted to be her future, he wanted to go to New York with her and watch her succeed no matter what everyone might say. He wanted to comfort her when something bad occurred, he wanted to watch her sing with adoring eyes.
He wanted to be her everything, because she was his only reason for living.
He could have transferred out of Lima when Quinn shattered his heart, his parents had offered, but he had stayed. Mainly at the start to show Quinn that he didn't need her to live and see how it went along with Santana but his parents offered to transfer him once again after he and Santana went their separate ways. He stayed because of Rachel, because one day she looked at him in the choir room during rehearsal and he could see the pain and defeat in her eyes. Finn was happy with Quinn and the fact that she had to see them everything day giggling and cuddling everywhere had broken what little confidence she had into a million pieces.
So he became her protector and gradually built her back up again.
Because a star like Rachel could never be allowed to burn out.
