Booted feet faltered imperceptibly. A motion so slight even the mover didn't notice.

"I came out here to find Edward. She's supposed to be… helping me with something."

"Right."

Tight lips pulled a lethal breath, leaving only toxic vapor to fill up the silence. Faye couldn't stand it, but she did. He was always so distant, even when standing right beside him. Inhaling the classic atmosphere that had become her commonplace, she waited. Any moment now…

A victorious smile allowed only in her head. And as had become their custom, their outlawed ritual, a newly lit cigarette found its way to her lips. Nimble fingers slow to recede; rough lingering on smooth. It was always like this. A faint glimpse of what might have been.
