Ellen Diggory sat alone in the last train compartment on the Hogwarts Express; her small figure barely took up a fourth of the long chair. The young girl's older brother, Cedric, had ran off with Cho Chang, his girlfriend since second year, earlier on the trip. This left Ellen to ponder her up coming year at Hogwarts; she was a first year and wouldn't see much of her brother anyway. At home Cedric had explained about the sorting ceremony at the beginning of dinner. A sorting hat would choose where she would stay the rest of her years at Hogwarts, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin. Cedric was in Hufflepuff and expected his sister to follow in his footsteps. Cho was in Ravenclaw and didn't care as long as Ellen was happy where she was, Ellen liked Cho because she always let her make her own decisions. Ellen still wasn't sure where she wanted to go, every house sounded great, except of course Slytherin, if she was put there she was sure to be disowned.

The littlest Diggory turned her head to the window, where the landscape seemed to fly by. Beautiful green hills and blue sky trailed and mixed because of the train's speed. She saw the English landscape change and become farming land. Ellen lost interest and watched people pass by in the train corridor. Many older students were out and about their prefect badges glimmering all perfectly shined. One girl caught Ellen's eye, a short girl with bushy brown hair stood talking to a stocky little boy, who was pale and had dark brown hair. He seemed ready to burst into tears, his eyes getting a watery feature, lips trembling, and nose running. Ellen wanted to comfort him and try to help him, but before she could get off the train chair the bushy hair girl was entering her train compartment.
