A/N: Here's a little something while ya'll wait for chapter 9 of One Last Mission--it's coming a little slowly, but I'm working on it.
Be sure to tell me what you think:
Disruptions
Dr. Carson Beckett sat down at his desk to catch up on some paperwork before leaving work for the night. It had been a very hectic day in the infirmary, but fortunately there hadn't been anything too serious. Just as he was starting to get into the groove of what he was doing, the man's thoughts were scattered by a very clear, distinctive sound (well, two actually):
Thud, CLINK!
Carson drew in a breath and attempted to continue his work.
Thud, CLINK! the sound came again.
The doctor was fully aware that the 'thud' was coming from the infirmary floor and the 'clink' from the back window of his office. He let out a testy sigh and turned back to his paperwork.
Thud, CLINK!
This time the man nearly threw his pencil down on the desk.
"Colonel," he threatened loudly enough to be heard through his open office door. "If you bounce that bloody ball one more time, I'll subject ye to a series of physical exams, all of which will be humiatin' and uncomfortable. That, and the inoculations you've been puttin' off for the last coupla months. Do I make myself clear?" There was no verbal response, but the noise immediately stopped. Smiling victoriously, Carson returned to his work.
"Doc?" Colonel Sheppard called after a moment. Carson turned towards the door, a look of frustration set in his features.
"Yes, Colonel?" he asked stiffly.
"Can I spend the night in my quarters?"
"No, Colonel," Beckett answered impatiently, "and you make another sound, I'll have ye gagged and physically restrained." Silence again. Finally, Carson believed he could get his work done. Then, a new noise disrupted the late-night stillness of the infirmary:
C-click!Thump. Carson put down his writing instrument. C-click! Thump.
Crutches. The doctor rose from his chair—it was going to be a long night.

End.
