I read a genderbend fanfiction, and decided to write one myself. It fits under that "slightly changed universe" area.
Changes: Fem!Guren! (Quick question- why are the exclamation points there? I never really got their purpose. :/)
Pairings: I don't have anything much planned for that. And no, I DON'T want votes, please and thank-you.
Warnings: I say once again. GENDERBEND! I don't see many not-fans, but just in case! :)
Lighting crashed in the sky, ominously illuminating the scene that took place within the dusty canyon below. Two armored robots faced each other, one large and threatening, the other seeming small yet bold.
The large and imposing one began to rant about something illegible, and the other yelled something back, although in a more high-pitched voice than one might expect. Then again, it was clear the smaller was about to clash their glowing red sword with the other's dimly lit spear. The very thought of facing one of such size would easily cause a large bout of stress to rake one's voice.
The two finished yelling and finally leaped at one another, pulling their weapons back and just about to strike…
"Guren! Come on, we need to leave!"
Letting out a surprised sound (along with the black cat that had been sleeping peacefully on his owner's chest), Guren Nash sat straight up in her bed, panting slightly after the violent dream.
Not that she could recall anything other than some quick-moving blurs and faint voices, but the way her red locks stuck to her forehead told her it was quite the violent dream.
Small tapping sounds came from her- well, it wouldn't be her's anymore very soon- door. It creaked open, showing the face of her father.
"Hey Guren? Are you up yet?" He questioned, not quite looking up as to respect his daughter's privacy. Not that it really mattered, as she wasn't wearing anything indecent.
"You can look up dad, and yeah I'm pretty awake." She giggled slightly. "Your yell did a great job of making sure I was." Picking his gaze off the floor, her father smiled happily at her.
"That's good. I was worried I'd need to get a bucket of water and-" He stopped to laugh at the face his dual-haired daughter made at him, which was full of fear and annoyance. She was very glad that did not happen.
"Anyway, you need to come downstairs and eat so we can leave." Her father finished as he left, shutting the door behind him. And with that, Guren flopped back onto the bed.
If there was one thing she was getting sick of, it was the constant need to move all of the time. And it always seemed to happen just as she was making some great friends… Well so much for that, and it wasn't like they saw completely eye-to-eye anyway. Once everyone figured out her gender, they always presumed that she had other interests than the ones she clearly showed prior. It was frustrating, and just because she was a girl, didn't instantly classify her as girly. But she wasn't a full on tomboy either.
Was there really a word to describe her tastes? Not quite a play-in-the-dirt, work-in-the-garage kind of person, but not really into makeup or shopping either?
She hummed thoughtfully to herself as she pet the cat that had decided to inconveniently curl up in her lap, and even start purring.
"Guren!" Her dad called somewhat threateningly, the bucket of ice prospect making itself known again. "Your cereal is getting soggy!"
"Coming dad!" She shouted back, sighing as she looked down to her cat, who meowed worriedly.
"I don't know Max. Maybe I'm just not meant to make close friends for a reason." Guren decided, in an even voice. Max seemed to disagree, and bumped his head against her face once she had sat up once more. The teen smiled and scratched at the white diamond shape on his forehead.
"Of course I mean other than you, silly cat." She smiled, deciding it was high time to pull herself from underneath the covers.
Taking one last glance at her room as she left it, Max following between her legs, Guren sighed and pulled away from it.
She had yet another one waiting for her where they were going, another long drive ahead, and it was that way whether or not she liked it.
"So that's the tower?"
Sunlight glinting off the shining surfaces on it, the large artistically shaped tower stood over the rest of the city as the car drove automatically on a bridge, leading Guren and her father closer to her new home. Not that she was going to be giving her father an easy time about it, though. (Plus, she was trying very hard to forget about the whisper she had heard earlier, which really creeped her out.)
Giving her a happy smile and leaning back, her father confirmed it. "Yep, pretty great huh?"
"It's okay I guess." Guren sighed, not willing to give her her dad the reaction he was wanting. Sensing this, he put a hand on her shoulder to comfort the girl.
"I know that moving was a big surprise for you-" He began.
"I was making a good friend, finally!" Guren harrumphed, making a small pout. Her father chuckled.
"Yes, but I promise this is the last move we'll make." He said, moving his hand from the shoulder to her back and rubbing it. Guren groaned.
"You said that two years ago, and the time before that, then the time before that, and…" She was about to go on a tirade, so her father put a stop to it before THAT could happen.
"Alright, I give!" He said, laughing as he pulled his hands up in surrender. "But I really mean it this time. This will be our last move!"
Unconvinced, Guren rolled her eyes and looked down onto the floor of the car, where in between her legs sat a very depressed Max, sitting within a crate with a clear top.
"Mreow…" He meowed dejectedly. Most likely from being in a crate, but he also didn't very much enjoy his owner being depressed either. So therefore, he agreed with whatever went with her. (Well, except for baths, which he could give himself.)
"See? Even Max isn't happy that we're moving again." Guren said, giving a soft smile to her pet and reaching in through a particularly large hole to scratch his cheek. Her father seemed to have an (amused) reply for this, but was cut off by the built in navigation system of the car.
Sighing as he switched the mode from auto drive to manual, he did his best to keep a happy face for his daughter. So much for their talk, but of one thing he was still sure.
She'd understand one day.
The movers weren't that far behind them, so it didn't take long for everything to be unloaded into the house, probably three hours at most. And while Guren was happy to sit on her not-bunk-but-still-elevated bed, she still wasn't happy to leave the old home so suddenly.
Max was making himself comfortable nearby when her father asked from down the stairs:
"So? Do you like your new room?"
"If I say no, then can we move back?"
"I think you know the answer to that."
Another large moan escaped her lips as she turned over to smash her face into the pillow. Getting up early wasn't really big on her, but Guren's father had made sure that she was signed up for her new school a week before they had left. Thankfully it wasn't one that required uniforms (there had been many awkward situations with that before), but it did mean that they had to be up by six thirty on the day they moved. Her body was making her tiredness well known as it tried to urge her back into sleeping.
Knowing full well she would do that, Guren decided to get up and off her bed before it could. Max perked up at this, and trotted over as she descended the short ladder.
"Hey Max," she cooed at him, giving him some of the loving he wished for. "I was just going to check on my school supplies. Want to help?"
A happy meow and some rubbing indicated a 'yes' to the dual-haired teen, and she smiled as she walked over to her desk and checked inside of her backpack that had been set over there. The cat jumped up and made himself comfortable on his owner's lap, purring contentedly as she rummaged through her new bag.
"Let's see… Notepad, pencils and pens, personal things, change of clothes… Hey, where'd my-?"
Looking off to the side, Guren easily found the item she had been searching for, and picked up a small round locket off the desk, clicking it open to show off a picture of an adorable young woman smiling softly at a small girl with long red and black-ish hair who was hugging her.
"I'd never leave mom at home!" The teen announced, longingly gazing at the photo. Eventually clicking it shut and setting it carefully in her bag, that was all which needed doing, and after checking her watch, it turned out to have not burn off much time either.
Groaning as she leaned back in the chair, Guren silently wondered when she was supposed to leave for her new school, anyway.
'Well, at least I have my computer out.' She decided to check on the website, which the school was lucky enough to have for people to sign up if they were in another town over, or to use for informing that a child wouldn't be making it. Clicking a couple of times, she found that on Monday's school began at eight, but...
"Eyaah!" Guren yelped, surprising Max off of her lap, the animal scampering off into the hall. "New students are required to come thirty minutes early!? If we don't leave now, we'll be late!" She cried, grabbing her bag quickly and rushing down the stairs. She ran to the kitchen, where her father was finishing both of their lunches. He looked up with a smile, that faded slightly when he saw the concern on his daughter's face.
"Hey Guren, what's wro-"
"New students have to come early! We're gonna be late at this rate!" She explained quickly, rushing over to her father who only had enough time to grab the lunches before being dragged off to the car by his worried daughter.
'I suppose I'll have to come back for my things.' He thought, getting into the car and turning on the ignition. He was only driving her to school that day since she didn't know where it was, otherwise she'd probably be running out the door with a quick goodbye instead.
Being late wasn't something Guren liked to do, as to make up for her often daydreaming in class. And she wasn't willing to be late on the first day, especially.
Once they arrived, her father was watching her nearly jump straight out of the car, only stopping to tell her dad,
"Bye, thanks, love you!" Before taking her lunch from him and running inside the school to find the principal's office, her father was as amused by her antics as ever.
'Some things will never change.' He mused to himself, as he began to drive back to the house.
So apparently, the big reason she was meant to come early, was to simply give her a basic map of the school, her locker number and code, and make sure that there were no special needs that had to be taken care of. Guren had nothing for the special needs area (though the principal did smirk when he saw her in contrast to her actual gender), and was therefore left to search the school grounds for her own classroom. She found her locker on accident, making a careful note of it as to come back later and put her things away. But that didn't help her find the classroom which seemed to be hiding from her.
'Well isn't the principal so responsible.' The dual-haired girl grumbled in her mind as she tried to make sense of the map in her hand. 'I think it was the hall before where I was supposed to make a left. Or was I supposed to cross the bridge...?'
She suddenly felt herself colliding with someone and quickly started to make her apologies.
"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't see you there." She said, sheepishly rubbing the back of her head. The boy, who had blonde hair, waved it off.
"From the looks of it, you're new here. And with the way they tend to treat new students, I'm not surprised that you're stuck reading the map like that." He said in a friendly tone. "If you want, I could show you the place that you're trying to find." The boy offered.
A relieved sigh escaped Guren's lips. She wouldn't be stuck ending up late to class, after all.
"Sure, I'd really appreciate that!" The girl said. The boy nodded and asked her which room she needed to find, and laughed when she told him.
"You're on the wrong side of the school!" He snorted, flipping the map she had over and tracing the path. This in turn made Guren blush in embarrassment. It wasn't like she knew that…
"Here, the room is this way." The boy said, grabbing her arm and pulling her along. Well that just confirmed her suspicions that he had already mistaken her gender. But she didn't feel like correcting it; the fact that she would have to bring it up, and then constantly explain to others around her when people went and said the proper 'she' or 'her' rather than the normally stated 'he' or 'him' that tended to happen. Heck, even her own father slipped up sometimes, and called Guren a 'him.'
"So, did you move here recently?" The boy suddenly asked, pulling Guren out of her thoughts. She nodded, wondering how he had known.
Smiling, he nodded himself. "Like I said, you look new and I now almost everyone in the school. It's almost like I have a personal goal to meet everyone." The boy said, laughing slightly. "Or maybe everyone has a secret personal goal to meet me."
Guren snorted at his small joke. At least she knew a friendly face she could turn to, just in case. The boy suddenly stopped next to a closed door.
"Here we are!" He announced, turning towards the girl. "I suppose I'll be seeing you around." The half-blonde waved goodbye, most likely heading off to his own classes.
Waving slightly herself as he left, Guren turned and took a big breath as she walked into the classroom. This was it, her new school once again.
Guren only hoped she could somehow make it different this time, as she met the new teacher, and turned towards the class.
Wow, I just ZAP! Connected with this story. It only took me like, five hours or something, to write this chapter. (No, that doesn't mean I can do the same for the rest, unfortunately.)
I don't exactly know why I had the urge to make Guren meet Chooki (without realizing it) here within the first chapter. Maybe I'm thinking ahead and not realizing it. :P
So, Guren as girl? This has got to turn out good! Or at least interesting, right?
Please remember to review! Imaginary marshmallows come to those who do!
See y'all next chapter!
(Edit: I came back and fixed some nit-pick errors I missed.^^')
