"Do you still miss him?"
Hiro looked over at the atrociously high heels that had come to stop next to him and then back down at the hat he clutched in his hands.
"Everyday." His voice was quiet, barely above a whisper.
For a moment both of them are silent, thinking about moments that were and could never be again until,
"You should come back in. The party will be fun! And I mean you are the guest of honor, it's your graduation!"
Hiro looked up to see wide eyes looking down at him from behind a pair of large pink glasses. He did his best to give her a smile, but it came out more as a grimace, "I'll be back in a minute. I was just thinking."
Honey Lemon lowered herself carefully to the ground and took a seat next to the boy. Well, she couldn't exactly call him that anymore she realized. It had been six years since he had lost Tadashi. Six long terrible and wonderful years, full of adventures none of them could have ever dreamed of and heartache they sometimes didn't think they could bear.
Looking over at Hiro, Honey bumped his shoulder with her own, but he continued to look down at the hat, so she tried again, "He would be so proud of you, you know, if he could see you now, all that you've done." This won her a small smile, pulling one to her own lips.
"I know that. I miss him so much though. I just… I just wish he could be here." His eyes when they looked back up at her were filled with tears, tugging at her heart. Hiro was like the little brother she never had, the little brother she could have had if only…
"I miss him too, Hiro," For a moment she deliberated whether to tell him or not, but finally she fell over the edge, "You know, Tadashi and I… we were, you know, together for a while before… before he died."
"Really?" The sadness in his eyes turned instantly to surprise, "Why didn't you ever tell anyone?"
Honey looked down at the phone in her hands. It had become her most precious possession since Tadashi's death. It alone held proof that the memories she had were real, that they had happened. Every bashful laugh, every goofy smile, every clumsy moment they had ever spent together, she couldn't let those be drowned in the pools of her memories. There were other memories too, of fleeting kisses and stolen glances, but those were too painful to dwell on. Tears began to pool in her eyes, "We were so close… There were moments when I thought that eventually we would…" Her voice cracked and she reached up to wipe the tears from underneath her glasses before clearing her throat, "I was selfish, Hiro. I thought that if I kept them to myself that I wouldn't have to share those memories. That I could keep that bit of Tadashi just for me." And as much as she tried to get them to stop, the tears kept falling forming two little puddles on the thighs of her dress.
Again silence fell over the two of them.
"I loved him. I loved him more than I've ever loved anything."
"Me too."
Honey smiled slightly as she looked over at Hiro again, and he returned it. She couldn't help but reach over and pull him into a hug.
"Thanks Hiro."
His shoulder shook in her embrace as he laughed, "For what?"
She smiled into his shoulder and closed her eyes for a moment, "For listening."
When he pulled back, his regular goofy smile was in full swing, "What are little brothers for?" Jumping to his feet he offered his hand down to the girl and pulled her to her feet, "Now lets get back in there! You know they can't be having much of a party without us!"
Honey smiled, "You go ahead! I'll just be a second." She watched him through the glass doors as he was greeted by GoGo and Wasabi, only to be pulled away by two girls she didn't know, each one vying for his full attention. Her smile widened as she watched his head swivel back and forth between the two of them before he pulled himself away, finally settling himself back next to Wasabi and the two of them launched into an animated conversation, the two girls watching frustratedly in the distance.
"Oh Tadashi…" She spoke aloud, before smiling up at the stars above her, "if only you could see your little brother now."
With that she pulled open the doors and rejoined the party, leaving the cold night air behind her.
