Safe Haven: A Faithful Meeting

Children covered the playground as recess started. The air was filled with laughter, kids ran around, some played hopscotch, others played on the monkey bars, and some played in the swings. A regular elementary school. Every child was welcomed. Every child except for one.

Pink eyes scanned the playground, looking for a spot to read a book peacefully. Her pink eyes scanned the playground while her long white hair ran down her back, her small hands held a book, and a smile present on her face. The young girl walked around the park and finally found a perfect spot for reading. She sat down under the shade of a tree and opened her book. Most kids would spend their time playing on the slide but this certain child preferred to read.

Meanwhile a young boy stood by the doors as his brown eyes scanned the playground. The swings were taken, many kids slid down the slide, and the monkey bars were full of children. There was no place for him to play in. Though that didn't discourage him. He took a deep breath and walked up to the kids in the slide.

"H-hi." He greeted with a bit of nervousness in his voice.

"What do you want?" One of the kids retorted.

"C-Can I join?" The boy asked.

"Go away, loser." One of the kids snapped.

"Yeah no one wants you here." The other added and shoved the boy making him fall back and land on his butt.

"Hey, you don't have to be so mean!" A girl's voice shouted. A small girl ran up to the group of kids as she witnessed what was called bullying.

"Go away." One of the kids ordered.

"No! You don't have to be such a bully to him!" She yelled.

"You're annoying." The kid growled and shoved her as well.

The girl fell back and dropped the book in her hand.

"Hey! You shouldn't push girls!" The boy stood and defended her.

The kid who pushed her, picked up the book and smirked, ignoring the boy. "What's this huh?"

"Hey! Give that to me!" The girl demanded and stood up. She reached for the book but the kid only raised his arm. She stood on her toes then jumped a few times but was too small to reach.

"Give up, girl." The kid snickered.

"Leave her alone!" The boy demanded.

"Or what, brave boy?!" The kid mocked.

The girl stared at the boy. Her innocent face made him feel the need to help her. Her pink eyes had tears welling up in the corners. Her white hair cascaded over her shoulders and ran down her back. Seeing her made him gather up his courage.

He walked up to the kid, standing in front of the girl. With his hands on his hips, he glared at the kid and spoke. "Give back her book." He demanded, confidently.

"Don't even bother trying." The kid laughed and flicked the boy's forehead.

The boy winced for a moment then glared at the kid once again. When the kid looked away he yanked the book away from the kid's hand.

"Hey!" The kid yelled.

"It's not yours!" The boy stated firmly.

The girl quickly took her book from the boy and hugged it. "Thank you." She said in a soft voice.

"Whatever. Keep your stupid book." The kid spat then walked away with his friends.

The boy sighed then turned to the girl and smiled. "Are you alright?" He asked.

She nodded and smiled back at him. "Yes, thank you."

Seeing her smile made him content. "So what book is that anyway?" He asked.

"Ah um it's just a book of fairy tales." She replied, looking at the book.

"So I'm guessing you like reading." The boy chuckled.

"Yeah. I prefer reading than going on the slide. The slide is usually crowded and I dot like crowds so I'd rather be away from everyone and read peacefully." The girl explained.

"But...don't you get lonely sometimes?" The boy asked.

The girl looked at him then sighed. "...sometimes."

The boy looked at her saddened expression and managed a smile. "I'm Kousuke Seto! Let's be friends!"

The girl looked up at him. "Friends?"

The boy, Kousuke, nodded.

The girl eventually smiled at him. "Alright! I'm Mary Kozakura!"

"Mary is a nice name!" Kousuke commented.

"Thank you! Your name is nice too!" Mary added.

"So uh...what fairy tale are you reading?" Kousuke asked and looked at the book in her hands.

"Oh I'm reading about Rapunzel." Mary replied and gazed at the book in her hands.

"Can I read with you?" Kousuke asked.

Mary glanced at him then smiled. "Sure!"

The two sat down under a tree and Mary started reading to him. Under the shade, hidden from the sun, and sitting together felt like eternity when in reality it was only for a few hours. Eventually parents were starting to come by and pick up their children. Soon enough Mary's mother arrived. Seeing Mary's mother made him somewhat surprised. Mary looked a lot like her mother.

"Ah Mary! Is he a new friend?" Her mother asked.

Mary nodded and smiled happily.

"I-I'm Kousuke Seto!" Kousuke blurted out.

"Well aren't you adorable. I'm Mary's mother! You can just call me Shion!" She smiled at him.

"Hey Kousuke, when will your parents pick you up?" Mary asked.

"I... I don't know. They usually pick me up late." Kousuke replied.

Shion felt sentimental hearing that from him. "If you want you can call your parents." She suggested and handed him her phone.

"Ah um. . . thank you." Kousuke slowly took the phone and dialed his parents phone number. After discussing with his mother he gave the phone back to her. "My dad is in a meeting and my mom is doing paperwork."

"Oh well how about you come and stay with us until your parents can pick you up." She suggested.

Kousuke slowly nodded. "Ok Just let my mom know." He once again called his mother.

Shion talked with his mother and in no time they were headed to Mary's house.

"Are you sure that you're alright with this, Ms. Kozakura?" Kousuke asked, nervously.

"Of course! Don't worry about it!" Shion assured. "I could make sandwiches for you two and you don't have to call me that. Just call me Shion!" She smiled.

"Yeah and we can play together!" Mary added with a smile on her face.

Kousuke managed a smile as well. "Alright!"

Hours had passed by since they arrived. They spent that time reading, playing and eating. It was already late and Kousuke's parents still haven't arrived.

"Kousuke would you like me to take you home?" Shion asked.

Kousuke nodded "yes that'd be nice."

"Alright come on kids." Shion walked out of the house along with Kousuke and Mary. She put the kids in the car, made sure they had their seatbelts on then got in herself. "Kousuke do you know the way to your home?" Shion asked.

Kousuke nodded and told her the way to his house. Shion drove to Kousuke's house and during the ride Kousuke and Mary spent that time falling asleep. The house wasn't big but it wasn't small either. It was somewhat elegant yet modern.

"Is this your house, Kousuke?" Shion asked. When there was no answer, she turned to notice that both Kousuke and Mary had fallen asleep. She smiled. "Those two are so adorable." She reached out and shook Kousuke's arm then Mary's. The two kids woke up. "Is this your house, Kousuke?" She asked once again.

"Mm... y-yes." Kousuke nodded. He blinked a few times to wake himself up.

"You have a pretty house, Kousuke." Mary said in a quiet voice while rubbing her eye sleepily.

"Thank you. Though it's not really much." Kousuke shrugged.

"Well lets go, kids." Shion turned off her car then got off, helped the two kids out of the car, locked the car, then walked up to the door while holding their hands.

She knocked on the door. A few minutes later, the door swung open revealing Kousuke's mother. "May I help you?" She asked. Her eyes laid on Kousuke and she gently placed her hand on her forehead. "Oh I knew we were forgetting something. Honey Kousuke is here!" She turned to shout out to Kousuke's father. "Come here, Sweetheart." She motioned for Kousuke to walk to her. "Thank you for bringing my son home." She smiled at Shion then at Mary who hid behind her while peeking her head out to look at Kousuke who was with his mother. "You're so adorable! You look just like your mother. What's your name?"

" ...Mary..." Mary timidly spoke.

"Are you Kousuke's friend?"

"...yes..."

"Um Mrs. Seto?" Shion interrupted.

""Yes?" Kousuke's mother looked at her.

"Shouldn't you pay more attention to your own child?"

"Are you questioning my parenting?"

"What? No! I'm just saying that because you forgot to pickup your own child from school!"

"Whatever. Thank you for dropping off my kid. Good night." Kousuke's mother closed the door.

"Mother?" Mary spoke as she and her mother were on their way home.

"Yes, Mary?"

"When I grow up... I want to marry Kousuke!" Mary stated confidently.

Shion chuckled. "Don't you think that you decided on that too fast?"

Mary shook her head." Nope! I know that I'll fall in love with him!"

"Okay then. I promise that I will always support you, Mary." Shion smiled.

"He was the first one to be nice to me. He even defended me when I was being bullied."

"He is a sweet child." Shion added. "I'm glad you made a new friend, Mary."
