Hi Guys
This is based off a prompt from Tumblr, Which has been nagging at my mind since i saw it on there. So i thought i put fingers to keyboard.

Missed Chance Memories
"Hey Sarge...Did you get your reception invite..."
"Sure did, Bout time those two got there heads on straight..."
That was the broken conversation he heard as he stepped into the elevator of the NYPD 12th precinct, Dressed in his normal black suit coffee in hand as the doors closed and made the short journey to the third floor.
12th Precinct Robbery Division.
As the elevator slowed to a stop, He stepped out and marched towards his desk. He didn't stop barely raising his head to greet his colleagues, He slumped down in his seat as he threw a copy of the NY times on his desk.
His mind flooded with thoughts, Flooded with images of a brunette beauty from the floor above. Homicide Detective Katherine Beckett, He only had brief encounters before their met mostly an elevator ride together and a hello in the corridor. That was until the paths crossed on a professional level, He was drawn to her she was breathtakingly beautiful and a hell of a cop. It was only natural he would pursue her.
Pursue he did. It wasn't easy though thanks to her persistent shadow, Always wading in looking for any chance to interrupt them. He was about to lie as say he didn't notice said shadow out the corner of his eye when she kissed him at the break room entrance.
Serves him right, For sticking his nose where it didn't belong.
He smiled at the thought of their time together. No matter how brief it was, The one abiding memory was the candle in the desk and Chinese food from Fong's. An idea he seen in a romantic soap he had watched, While slowly falling asleep on the couch in his apartment.
The reason. Her smile.
However it wasn't his decision to end thing, That came from her. He'll never forget the look on her face when she told him.
"Your just not what I'm looking for right now"
What was she looking for?, The distant look in her eyes when she told him that proof it wasn't him and he knew it never would be.
So he departed the Homicide floor. Retreating back down his desk in robbery, Hoping to never hear the name Katherine Beckett again.
So here he was at his desk, Four years having past since that time. His eyes drawn to a copy of the New York Times, Page Six Entertainment section.
It's headline read:
Richard Castle, Superstar Mystery Author and NYPD Detective Katherine Beckett are pleased to announce the date of their wedding...
On one level he was happy. She had found what she was looking for, The love of someone special. The love she deserved and it pained him to say the love she couldn't get from him.
However on a much deeper level. It hurt deep in his soul, He had never met anyone quite like her and he knew he never would again.
He was broken from his thoughts as a voice shouted in his direction.
"Hey Demming...We got a case...you coming"
Detective Tom Demming nodded and stood from his desk following his partner towards the elevator, The copy of the times open on page six a colour photo of the happy couple.
Once again it pained him to walk away from her, But it was the right thing to do.
Most would call it a 'Missed Chance Memory', But that's OK because she's happy.
Now that's all that matters.
The End
