Disclaimer: I don't own Labyrinth (1986).
Sarah pressed her fingertips to her head, spinning around her party with a happily surprised expression. While she was spinning, Sarah caught sight of something outside her window that made her heart skip a beat. She flinched with a jolt to her heart, making her go still to meet the yellow eyes of a white owl.
They played the game of unblinkingly staring at each other, no one else detecting what was going on. The owl averted his eyes from Sarah, giving her enough reason to walk over and push open the window.
Jareth, who had just transformed back to his human state, looked up from the ground. His eyes looked lonely, "I was content with just watching you, Sarah."
Sarah thought a moment with her eyes down cast. Jareth watched her solemnly. She flicked her eyes back up at his, "Why did you do this for me?"
Jareth moved his eyes about, not allowing them to settle on her, "You wanted to see your friends again. I thought I could finally make you happy."
"You did make me happy." she said quietly.
He looked back at her, "Then, why did you leave me? Why did you choose this place?"
"Because I had to save Toby and set things right." she answered firmly, without raising her voice too much.
His expression became very serious, "You asked for me to take him. I thought you would have remembered that if you were in my labyrinth long enough."
Sarah held herself like royalty, trying not to let her anger show through, "I only asked that because I didn't think you really exist."
"Well, I do exist." he said, sounding a little hurt by her explanation.
"And you're in love with me." Sarah added in a voice that allowed no room for denial on Jareth's part.
"Yes," he told her, "I love you."
"I don't think any one but me knows." she said. "At least that's how it went in my story: that no one knew the Goblin King had fallen in love with the girl."
"Have you known this whole time?" he asked briskly.
"No," she answered, "I figured it out while I was in the labyrinth."
"I thought you would only have been thinking of your brother." he said.
"I was," she nodded, "but I also thought of you."
He lost his mask, letting his sorrow pull his eyes down, "But you never loved me."
She observed him not allowing himself to look at her. She knit her brow together, recalling her time with Jareth in the labyrinth. Mostly, she recalled when he had danced at the ball with her, singing to her softly.
"I do love you." she realized, making him look up in shock.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
She looked him dead in the eyes, "I'm sure."
He smiled with his mouth closed, she did the same.
"Do you mind if I kiss you?" he asked like a gentleman, finally playing the good guy.
"No." she shook her head from side to side, still smiling like he was.
Jareth leaned forward, one hand gripping the window sill and the other cradling the side of her head. Their lips touched in a meeting of long awaited but sweetly delivered love.
When they both pulled away, they smiled into each others eyes. Sarah wordlessly took Jareth's hand, leading him into the party.
