Chapter 1: The Escape

I continued hurrying down the mountain road, listening to the footsteps slowly catching up with me. I'm usually pretty fast, but I was holding Kylie as she slept over my shoulder. I don't know how she managed to sleep at a time like this, but I'm glad she was. The clouds were thick with potential rain, hiding the moon, and the wind was picking up. Yet, it was surprisingly warm outside. I was getting tired quickly, not only was it dead night and I was sprinting as fast as could be expected, but I had literally just gotten got tried on a new drug. Why did I think that today would be a good day to leave?

It seemed like hours had passed, yet I was still being followed, and probably due to the drug, I was becoming increasingly dizzy. Finally the footsteps behind me seemed to be slowing. I really began to feel like I might escape. Then, of course something had to happen. I tripped. I fell on my side scraping and rolling down the dirt road. Kylie was alright except maybe a few scratches but she was awake now. I couldn't get up, a mix between complete exhaustion and possible injuries, the receding footsteps would catch up with me soon. Please give up and turn around. A figure appeared coming down the road, the whole world was starting to go blurry. Whatever drug they testing on my obviously had some major side-effects. Yet, I knew that shadow was her, and she wasn't going to let a prized subject go.

"Becky?" I heard Kylie whisper urgently in my ear. It sounded so distant."What's going on?" I couldn't reply, it was all I could do to hold her tighter. The shadow came closer, as lightning flashed through the sky, even though the world was so distorted, therefore I couldn't see her face, but I knew it would have portrayed her unmistakable grin. "Great job, Nicole. You really almost got away." She said in the same tone a mother would use to explain to a child why they must never touch the hot stove again. Nicole. She always called me by my first name, that was probably the reason I like to be called Becky, my middle name, now. I wanted to drown her, to slice her throat, to accidentally make her fall of the side of this road, to tear her apart bit by bit. I knew I wouldn't though, I never was able to disobey her. Besides, I couldn't even get up off the ground. "Get up." She commanded me. I relished the sensation of not being able to obey. That sensation quickly faded to panic. I have to obey her. I shook myself and attempted to get up. I still wasn't able to. "I can't." I finally said in desperation.

She came closer to me, I was straining to keep my eyes in focus. I knew if she had to, she would drag me up the road. So much for our escape. Seconds itched away so slowly as she walked towards me. She was inches away from me when I heard her cry out in . . . pain? Surely I was hallucinating. No, she fell to the ground and rolled down the side of the mountain road. On any normal occasion I would have had at least a few moments of relief, but this was no normal occasion. I couldn't really defend myself now if whoever sent her down the mountain decided to come after me or Sadie.

My hyperventilating made things worse. Either this night was getting darker or I my mind was withdrawing from the world around it. I began loosing feeling in my limbs. Bad drug. Just as I felt almost completely detached, I swear I heard voices. "You're going to be okay, just hang on." Said a soft male voice. Yeah right. I was too soon lost in darkness. My last thought, Kylie.
