Inuyasha lowered his head, staring down at his bare, calloused feet. The wind pushed at his back, it's icy tendrils biting at his exposed skin. He took a hesitant step forward, chest heaving in a silent sob. The scent of recently turned dirt was almost enough to make his stomach roll. "Oh, Kagome…" He murmured wistfully.
"I'll always love you Inuyasha," she whispered. Her skin was wrinkled, grip weak.
The hanyou smiled faintly, reaching out to tuck a wisp of her now-gray hair behind an ear. "Do you have to go, Kagome?"
She closed her eyes. "I am so tired…"
He let out a shaky breath. "Then you should sleep."
Inuyasha closed his eyes. For nearly sixty years they had lived together. He remained unchanged, and she grew so old… Shippou had left long ago, and Miroku and Sango disappeared after the final battle with Naraku. He turned slowly, gaze falling upon Kagome's crude grave. She hadn't even been able to have children… her miko powers had seen to that.
Moving without thought, the half demon slumped to his knees and fell forward, burying his nose into the fresh earth. Her scent still clung so weakly to it…
"Pathetic," a dark tone spat.
Inuyasha remained still; the voice was so familiar…
"She was human, such foolish and fleeting things…"
A growl rose in his throat, spinning around to face none other than Sesshoumaru. The daiyoukai's image remained the same; it brought nostalgia crashing down around him. "Shut up!" Inuyasha howled. "What the fuck would you know!"
"More than you would think," he answered smoothly. His eyes were distant.
The hanyou's ear twitched. His voice softened. "I just… didn't imagine how quickly time would pass…" He frowned, something nagging at the back of his mind. "That girl-"
"Rin passed on," Sesshoumaru interrupted suddenly. His tone was bitter. His eyes were empty.
"Oh…" It made sense, after all. Rin too, had only been human.
"We are not human." The youkai said abruptly. "We watch things grow, wither and die in an eye blink."
Inuyasha stumbled forward, vision bleary. "Why are you here, Sesshoumaru?"
"Would you rather I not be, little brother?"
The half demon glanced up with a faint smile. "Keh, whether I like it or not, you're all I have left, ne?"
Sesshoumaru raised a brow. His fingers itched to reach out and pull the fumbling hanyou against him. It caught him off guard, his body acting of it's own accord and doing just so. Inuyasha let out a quiet gasp, claws digging into his brother's arm.
"What are you doing?" He hissed, pushing away.
"Is it not true what you have said? All we have left, Inuyasha, is each other."
