I received a prompt from Dante 101 to write a story:

Poor Liz Forbes dies with Caroline by her side! (cries) Next week's episode is the funeral and there's been talk that Caroline might just turn off her humanity. So what I was asking if Klaus and the Originals could show up there. And yeah, I'm just asking for Klaroline love here!

So here is what I came up with. I hope you like it Dante 101 ;)

Enjoy x

My Mom Is Dead

My mom is dead... Caroline was bent over Liz's still warm body, guttural cries escaping her throat as her heart shattered into tiny pieces in her chest, "She's gone! My mom's gone!" She sobbed into her moms chest, her heart dying just a little bit more at the fact that her mom would never wrap her arms around her to give her comfort again.

Stefan swallowed hard at Caroline's heartbroken sobs. Today was supposed to be the start of something new for them, their kiss still stuck in his mind playing over and over again, however that was now overshadowed by Liz's passing. How were they supposed to move forward after today? He didn't know. One thing he did know was that she would always be his best friend no matter what may or may not happen between them.

Damon stared at Liz, his eyes wide to stop the tears escaping. Elena's head on his shoulder and the quiet sobs racking her body made him pull her closer. He distracted himself by comforting her so as not to break down himself, my best friend is dead. Again. That thought made him slam his eyes shut, dammit Liz! This is so unfair, you've survived EVERYTHING only to be stolen by cancer. So humanly unjust.

Matt bowed his head in sorrow. The Sheriff had been a mother to each and every one of them, the last remaining parent in Mystic Falls was now gone, they were all alone now, orphans, the lot of them. He looked over at Caroline and could no longer stand back and watch her fall apart. He sped over and wrapped his arms around her shaking body, "I'm so sorry, Care."

Caroline clutched her moms hand in hers, unwilling to let go of her, to lose the last connection she had, she was not leaving this bed until her mother was cold. Her shoulders began shaking when a body covered her, Matt's arms cradling her in his strong arms and his soothing voice in her ear.

Elena's heart broke as Matt engulfed Caroline's small body, shielding her from everyone's prying eyes. She tilted her chin up to whisper in Damon's ear, "Get them away from this room, compel them away, Damon." Damon shifted his head so that he was looking into her eyes, the pain in his made her cup his cheek, "She deserves her grief to be private."

"Of course." Damon nodded his agreement, "I'll take care of it." He kissed Elena softly, stroked her cheek and left to compel every nurse, doctor, patient, visitor and janitor to stay the fuck away from Liz Forbes room, only family was allowed to be there until Caroline was ready to let go of her mom.

Elena smiled after Damon's retreating form, he couldn't express it to anyone but his heart was broken at Liz's death. They were best friends and he loved her. She made her way over to Caroline and Matt and joined their hug. Her own tears soaking her cheeks, it felt like she had lost yet another parent. She still had Alaric, Caroline had no one.

Stefan felt left out as Matt and Elena comforted Caroline. He had been the one by her side for weeks now, trying desperately to repair their broken friendship and make up for abandoning her when Damon died. His grief at losing his brother had crippled him, he had searched for a way to bring them back but once he saw the empty field where the Gemini coven was supposed to be he had lost his hope and he couldn't go back. In 1864 he made Damon turn because he couldn't imagine his life without him and when he died Stefan was so close to switching it all off that he had to run away from it all. He wouldn't let Caroline feel like she had nothing left. He sat on the edge of the bed and stroked his hand through her hair.

Caroline turned her head and met Stefan's gaze. She felt like herself and her mom were surrounded by the people that loved them and could understand how devastated she felt. She couldn't express anything other then another cry of, "She's gone!"

Stefan knelt next to Caroline, still stroking her hair, "Look at her, Caroline." He could see her hesitate before looking at Liz, "She is smiling, her final precious moment made her smile." He stroked his thumb across her cheek, wiping one of her many tears away before resting his forehead against hers.

Caroline closed her eyes as she recalled her moms last memory. When she learnt to ride her bike, her mom let her go and told he she was ready. She wasn't and she wouldn't have ever been. The memory was beautiful and precious to her now, and yet hurt like hell.

Damon returned to the hospital room after compelling everyone, Caroline and Liz would have total privacy until Caroline felt that she could leave her mom behind. Looking at the mess of arms around Caroline that was Stefan, Elena and Matt, he knew that wouldn't be anytime soon. He stood guard in the doorway and watched over them. His gaze slid to Stefan, his heart clenching in his chest as he recalled when HE lost Stefan first, he would have killed anybody and done anything to bring his little brother back. He didn't regret dying so that his brother could live, he would do the same thing again in a heartbeat, he did hate the thought of the pain Stefan went through.

Damon stood there well into the night, watching over his brother, girlfriend, best friend, Caroline and even Matt, until Caroline was able to let her mom go. If he shed a tear, well, everyone was focused on Caroline and was not paying attention to him so it was like it never happened.

My mom is dead... Caroline looked herself over in the mirror. Her make up was minimal, her hair kept simple, her black dress sedate. She wanted to look the best for her mom. She shut her eyes and bit her lip to prevent another onslaught of tears. She took long deep breaths just as Stefan taught her all that time ago in that bathroom. Looking at herself again she raised her chin, "I just need to get through the day." And then I'll turn it off.

"You will. Because you're the strongest person I know." Stefan leant against the doorway, his caring eyes never straying from Caroline's face in the mirror.

Caroline blinked rapidly to keep the tears buried deep for just a little longer. Her breath hitched in her chest as the pain hit her yet again, it just kept hitting her over and over again and she couldn't stand it, it was too much.

Stefan had Caroline in his arms in a flash, her chin resting on his shoulder, his hand cradling her neck as she sobbed in his ear. He rocked her gently, his heart breaking for his best friend, her sobs making him want to take away her pain and take it for himself. She didn't deserve this.

"Was this how you felt?" Caroline cried, her fingers digging into Stefan's shoulders as she held onto him, "This aching pit deep inside, emptiness in my heart and pain that just never ends."

"Caroline..." Stefan didn't want to lie to Caroline and tell her that it would get better because it won't, not for a long long long time. Stefan only got better because when he finally went to the Salvatore crypt to say some semblance of a goodbye to his brother Damon came back. He was whole, and alive, and perfect, and when he wrapped his arms around him, crying tears of indescribable joy, he finally let the pain that had consumed him go, he never wanted to let go of Damon. So yes he did know what that crushing pit of despair and the pain that never ever stopped hurting felt like but, he never got the chance to get over it and he's not sure he ever would have.

"I'm sorry." Caroline sobbed harder in Stefan's solid embrace, "God I am so sorry. I knew you were hurting but I never knew it felt like this." She pulled back to stare into Stefan's eyes, "I'm sorry that I ever said I hated you, you didn't deserve that."

Stefan cradled Caroline's cheeks, his own eyes growing wet with tears, "I did deserve it. I pushed you away, and I hurt you so much, and I was a dick to you."

Caroline laughed tearily, "Yeah you were."

Stefan smiled at the sight of Caroline's smile, even in the darkest of times she could still find it in her to smile.

Caroline took a deep breath and wiped the tears from her face, "I'm ready."

Stefan shook his head in wonder, this girl whom had seemed so shallow when he met her had grown into the kindest, strongest woman he knew. Caroline would get through this he knew it. He ran his hand down the length of her arm to entangle with her fingers, "Lets say goodbye to your mom."

Caroline held onto Stefan's hand tightly as they made their way down the stairs of the boarding house. Waiting for her were Elena, Damon and Matt. Her heart ached for the still missing Bonnie, she wished with her whole heart that she could be here today as she needed all of her best friends.

My mom is dead... Caroline sat in the pew in church, Matt and Stefan to the right of her and Elena and Damon to the left. The pastor's spoke words honoring her mom, a tear ran down her cheek.

Elena reached out to Caroline's hand. She squeezed her hand as they shared a look of understanding.

Police force members walk up to honor Sheriff Forbes. They place an American flag over her casket.

The officer reached for the radio on his chest and spoke into it, "Calling Sheriff Forbes. This is the last call for Sheriff Forbes. No response. Radio Number 2-6 is out of service after twelve years and four months of police service. Gone, but never forgotten. Center!"

The officers returned to their seats.

Damon walks up for the eulogy. He looked out at the sea of people before his gaze landed on Caroline and he spoke directly to her, "Liz Forbes was my friend. In her last moments, she asked me to pass along a message to her daughter, but I cut her off before she could say too much. I told her she could tell Caroline herself, but she didn't get that chance. Your mom wanted you to know how proud of you she was, and she should be. You're a beautiful, strong woman, a generous friend, and a bright light in a sea of dark. She said you were extraordinary, and you are, and so was she. Liz was a hero to this town. She was a hero to all of you. And she was a hero to me. Goodbye, Sheriff. You will be missed." Damon returned to his seat next to Elena.

Caroline walked up to the front, "Thank you all for coming. This is for my mom." She took a breath before she began singing, "Go in peace. Go in kindness. Go in love. Go in faith. Leave the day. The day behind us. The day is done. Go in grace. Let us go into the dark. Not afraid. Not alone. Let us hope by some good pleasure. Safely to. Arrive at home."

My mom is dead... Caroline walked through the forest, her arms wrapped around her waist, tears cascading down her cheeks. She had finally been left alone, which she had wanted and dreaded at the same time. She took one look at her moms cardigan before she had to leave the house, the pain, despair and memories overwhelming her. She didn't want to go back to the boarding house as she spent the whole night there. She wanted to be on her own so that she could turn it off and stop this sadness and pain inside of her.

It hurt so bad.

My mom is DEAD!... Caroline dropped to her knees, sobs shaking her body. All she wanted was the pain to be gone, for this sadness and anger to leave her. She didn't want to feel anymore.

"I love you, mom." Caroline placed her hand on her stomach, the agony ripping through her took her breath away, "God I miss you so much." She took deep shuddering breaths, closed her eyes and prepared to flip her switch.

A hand touched her back, warm and familiar. She felt a breath on her neck and a soft British accent in her ear, "Don't do it, Caroline."

Caroline gasped, her eyes flying open and her heart started to race, "Klaus?"

"I'm here, sweetheart." Klaus stroked his hand against Caroline's back, his head nuzzling against hers, "I came as soon as I heard."

"How?" Caroline was afraid to turn her head to see if Klaus was really there.

"I still have my sources, love." Klaus had left New Orleans as soon as he heard the news, leaving Hope in the care of Elijah, Rebekah and Hayley's new pack. After Kol's death he had needed to get away, to escape the grief which clung to him, his siblings and Davina. He wished he had another reason to visit Caroline, he knew how much she loved her mother and he knew that the pain of losing her could destroy her.

Caroline swallowed before she gained the courage to look at Klaus. The loving compassion on his face almost had her falling into his arms. Almost. She gazed into his eyes, her soft voice trembling, "I thought you were never coming back?"

"Caroline," Klaus lowered his head to rest against Caroline's, "I think the death of your mother is more than enough reason to break my promise."

Caroline choked out a laugh, "Like you ever needed one."

"For you?" Klaus eyes were serious, his hand cupped Caroline's cheek, "I would have kept my word until you asked me to come," he smirked, "or you came to me."

Caroline rolled her eyes, a small smile on her lips, "Always so sure, Klaus."

"Part of my charm." Klaus's dimples deepened further, his eyes sparkling at the faint light he could still see in Caroline despite what she was about to do.

Caroline laughed, loud and uncontrollably until she remembered what happened today and she bit her lip as her laughter turned into sobs.

"Oh, Caroline." Klaus whooshed in front of Caroline and pulled her into his arms. He rest his chin on the top of her head, his hands running up and down her back.

Caroline clutched her hands in Klaus's jacket as she sobbed into his chest. Her heart was broken and her pain was indescribable. She just didn't want to feel this anymore, "My mom is dead. She's gone and I... I don't want to feel anymore."

"I know you don't." Klaus buried his hand in Caroline's hair and brushed his mouth against her forehead, "I know it hurts worse than any torture you have endured before. It burns, and cuts deep, and leaves a wound that will never ever heal." He knew his grief over Kol was coming out through his words, he wouldn't burden Caroline with that knowledge, instead he stole his own comfort from the love of his life, hoping with his whole heart that he brought her comfort in return.

"Then why stop me from turning it off?" Caroline cried, pulling away to stare pleadingly into Klaus's gaze, "Why won't you let me stop the pain?"

Klaus cradled Caroline's cheeks in his palms, his thumbs brushing against her skin and collected her tears, "It doesn't stop it, the pain is still there, hidden deep in your soul, making you lash out." He kissed her nose, "Letting you kill and kill and kill until you think that you have no more pain in you."

"I can do it." Caroline nodded her head, "I have the most self control out of everybody. I am better at being a vampire than Elena, and Stefan." He voice trembled as she repeated, "I can do this."

Time to play dirty. Klaus knew that Caroline could convince herself that she could do just about anything but he was going to make sure this isn't one of them. He looked into her hauntingly beautiful face, her eyes pleading with him, and steeled himself for the pain he was about to cause her, "You mother would not want you to do this. She would not want you to become a monster."

Caroline's face crumbled and she dissolved into sobs. Cries escaped her throat as thoughts of her mom tortured her, once her mom thought she was a monster and couldn't stand the sight of her until Caroline compelled her to forget. When her mom finally excepted her, their relationship had never been better. Did she really want to sully that by maybe becoming a ripper? A monster?

"You are stronger than even you know, my love." Klaus kissed under Caroline's eyes, breathing in her scent and tasting the salt on his lips. He continued brushing kisses down her cheeks, across her jaw until he was a breath away from her lips, "Never lose that light inside of you, Caroline, as it is so precious." He closed the space between them and covered her lips with his, savouring the taste of her again.

Caroline's eyes fluttered closed at the feel of Klaus's soft mouth against hers. The kiss was sweet, slow and so full of feelings that Caroline felt her heart skip a beat. It was horribly inappropriate but when had she ever not been inappropriate. She raised her hands up to cover Klaus's, returning his kiss softly, a warm glow in her chest from the contact.

Klaus continued his gentle caressing of Caroline's lips. There was none of the passion of last year, but what was there was love. His love for her went deep, it was ingrained in his very soul, the purest love he had besides his love for his daughter. He could feel in Caroline's kiss the hint of her feelings for him, and the hesitation that still held her back. No matter, he would wait for her to be ready.

Caroline nuzzled Klaus's nose as she broke the kiss, her eyes locking on Klaus's, "I'm still not ready."

"I know." Klaus brushed a kiss across Caroline's lips.

"Thank you." Caroline whispered, her eyes dropping to look at Klaus's lips before flicking back up to his eyes, her teeth chewing on her lip.

"For what?" Klaus brushed a piece of Caroline's hair beside her ear, running his knuckles against her cheek.

"For stopping me from making a horrible decision." Caroline covered Klaus's hand with hers, "For being there for me." She looked down at their joined hands before gazing into his eyes, "And for loving me."

Klaus's breath hitched, that was the second time Caroline had mentioned his love for her; the first being after he bit her, and it made his heart race at how sure she was when she said it, not a trace of hesitation in her voice, "You don't have to thank me for any of that, Caroline." He stole a quick kiss from her, "I will always be here when you need me."

Caroline smiled, her eyes filled with her light.

"Do you want to go home, sweetheart?" Klaus asked, prepared to do whatever Caroline needed him to do for her.

Caroline bit her lip. She couldn't be at her house, alone and buried under a lifetime of memories of her mom, she would turn it off for sure. She stood up, took a deep breath and made her decision, "Can you take me to the boarding house, Klaus?"

"As you wish." Klaus also stood up and held his arm out for Caroline to take.

Caroline looped her arm around Klaus's, laid her head on his shoulder and took a slow walk to the Salvatore's.

Caroline and Klaus arrived at the boarding house quicker than she expected. She had been losing herself in the quiet and the strong presence of Klaus beside her.

Klaus walked Caroline to the door, wishing he had more time with her but knowing that one day he would have forever. He released her arm but held onto her hand. His eyes portrayed his seriousness, "If you ever need me do not hesitate to call me. I will always be there for you, Caroline."

"I know." Caroline squeezed Klaus's hand, "And if I ever need you I will call."

Klaus kissed Caroline's cheek, "You will get through this." He released her hand and took a step back, "Goodbye, Caroline."

"Goodbye, Klaus." Caroline smiled at Klaus one last time before he whooshed off. She turned to face the door, her hand poised to knock, debating whether she really wanted to be here or her own house.

You will get through this.

Caroline took courage from Klaus's belief in her and raised her chin high and knocked on the door.

Stefan answered, a worried frown on his face as he looked Caroline over, "You know you never have to knock, Care."

Caroline just nodded, unable to find the words as unbearable sadness filled her bones.

"Did I hear Klaus?" Stefan asked, his jaw clenched.

"Yes." Caroline replied, her voice scratchy from all the tears she'd shed, "He... helped me."

Stefan nodded, unable to voice his thoughts. He took Caroline's hand, rubbing his thumb across it as had become their thing, "Come in, make yourself at home and I'll get you a drink."

"Make it a bottle." Caroline replied, the smallest smirk curling her lips and the barest twinkle in her eyes.

"Bottle it is." Stefan's voice was relieved to see the tiniest hint of the positive Caroline he couldn't bare to see die. He was so glad that she had come to him, he had been terrified that she would turn it off.

My mom is dead... Caroline looked into the sky, thoughts of her mom and a sad smile touched her lips, and I think I'm gonna be okay.
