"The worst pain a man can suffer: to have insight into much and power over nothing" - Herodotus
Emily's boots clattered nosily on the tiled floor as she bolted around the corner, gun drawn and Kevlar vest secured, to where she could hear the voices of their Unsub's.
She could feel the adrenaline pulsing through her veins but she ignored the feeling, trying to bring her body into a state of silence in order for her to see clearly.
Once she came upon the Unsub's who'd been hiding out in the small alcove at the back of the building they were raiding, she shouted at them to freeze and drop their weapons.
Her orders were ignored however, and this resulted in three shots being fired almost simultaneously.
Two of the bullets rocketed from Emily's fire arm, hitting the first man in the chest and the second right between the eyes, killing both men on the spot.
It was the bullet from the second Unsub's gun that carried a threat however... It whirled through the air and impacted its intended victim at colossal speed.
The force of the bullet hitting Emily was enough to send her crashing to the ground, slamming her head on the tiles as she fell, which sent bursts of colour popping up in her eyes and a dull ringing throughout her head.
The adrenaline she'd felt earlier was now gone, replaced instead with a different feeling... one she rarely felt, even on this job... the feeling of pain mixed with fear.
She knew she'd been hit, she could feel the almost numb pain pulsing from her lower thigh right up to her head where it was slowly turning into a headache.
She was scared... no doubt about it... but she tried anyway to lift her head, wanting to view the damage that had been done, but she found she couldn't... her head was simply too heavy for her to lift up so instead she felt the wound with her hand.
What this inspection revealed however brought a tear to Emily's eye... there was blood, and lots of it, the bleeding was probably arterial... and if it was she wouldn't last very long without help.
She tried to call out, or even reach her phone which had flown across the room on her impact with the floor, but both attempts were useless.
This revelation made her tears flow freely, partly due to the shock and partly due to the fact that... that well, she'd not wanted it to end like this, and defiantly not lying on the dirty floor of an old derelict building.
She'd wanted to die of old age, in a nice retirement home, surrounded by pictures of her family... of her grandchildren and children.
It was then however, while wishing she'd not run around that corner, that she heard what she thought at first was the voice of an angel.
"Prentiss... Emily, can you hear me?" Hotch shouted, kneeling down at her side.
Emily tried to respond but she found herself unable to form clear words in her head, never mind speak so instead she gave Hotch a small... and painful... nod of her head.
"Ok good, well I need you to stay with me Emily, the ambulance is coming really soon, I promise... you'll be fine!" He whispered, trying to reassure himself just as much as he was trying to reassure her.
Emily could feel herself slipping away though, she could feel her energy drain out of her very soul and almost leave through her mouth... she could see the image of Hotch blur and fade before her eyes and she could feel her breath getting more and more laboured by the minute.
It was on the brink of consciousness however that Emily heard sirens in the distance, and even though they seemed mile's of, just as she slipped away, she fest a tiny ray of hope, that she'd be ok.
