Interrupted Daydreams

12 year old Anne Shirley gazed out the window of the Avonlea schoolhouse. She should have been concentrating on what Mr. Phillips was saying about the importance of geometry. Instead, she was constructing a fantasyland for her and her new bosom friend, Diana Barry. They would be queens of Mooreland, kindly ruling the birds, trees and other creatures of the forest. They would have amazing adventures and be courted by romantic suitors and… Before Anne could figure out what she and Dianna would do next , her thoughts were interrupted by a piercing "pst, pst, pst" Gilbert Blithe who sat across the aisle from Anne was trying to get her attention. Annoyed that she had been awakened from her from her daydream, Anne ignored Gilbert. Let's see, her and Diana would find an exquisite treasure inside the treasure chest would be… "Hey Carrots, Carrots" Gilbert whispered. Anne was furious but she intended to ignore him. Unfortunately, Gilbert took one of her long red braids in his hand, gave it a tug and hissed "carrots" in Anne's ear. Rage flooded through Anne. She leaped up and grabbed the first thing she could get her hands on, Gilbert's slate. Without thinking or hesitating, she raised the slate and brought it down squarely on Gilbert's head with a satisfying crack. Even as Mr. Phillips pounced on Anne and pulled her to the front of the schoolhouse, Anne felt a ray of satisfaction come through her storm cloud of rage.
