His hand lay flat on the table, stretched out as if to bridge the distance between them. Merely centimetres holding between his and her own, which curled around her coffee cup. Her eyes were downcast, as were his, and they both sat in companionable silence, soaking in the comfort of one another's presence. She looked out at the world passing by the diners window, watched as the people who had no cares went about their lives. He watched her watching them, wishing for nothing more than to be able to offer her a life without this pain. This pain that plagued her, a lifetime of betrayal and disappointment. And still they sat, no words passing between them. She reached blindly across the table, her eyes not leaving her envious view, and lay her hand over his. He turned his hand and grasped tightly onto hers, and his ears strained to hear her delicate sigh. He broke the silence.

'I know, Bones, I know'
