Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
The Fray-How To Save A Life

He had been depressed for a while now. A happy, carefree mask plastered on his face 24/7. But now the disguise was slowly slipping. He was starting to allow that dead look in his eyes to come back, he was working less hard to make his smile seem genuine and he even stopped reciprocating hugs and enthusiasm. The worst part was, nobody noticed. Not even his girlfriend.
He tried a few times to tell his Vanilla Bear. But the answers were always similar, "Not now Turk! Friends is on!", "I'm too tired Turk, it's 4am get out of my room!" Or "For gods sake Turk this guys coding! Get out of the way!"
Fair enough, the times weren't picked out too well but still!
'Way to be there for your buddy.' The black surgeon thought to himself.
The days and weeks began to roll into one big muddle, until he could take it no more. He had been arguing with himself for months now but now he'd finally made up his mind. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him up to the hospital roofs edge and looked down. His face broke into the first genuine smile, and he realised he hadn't smiled in forever.
"What are you doing here?" Ted squeaked, in a voice that could only justify that he still hadn't quite hit puberty. Turk hadn't realised Ted was there until now.
"I'm going to jump!" Turk said confidently.
"Yeah, I come up here to jump everyday, but I never can. Dammit Ted, you're such a failure!" He shouted, smacking himself.
"Well I'm going to do it now, so adioĊ Ted!" Turk replied.
"Wait! Take me with you!" Ted pleaded.
Turk considered this for a bit, but decided that one staff death was enough for today.
"I'm sorry Ted, but this is for your own good." Turk said. He then punched Ted, knocking him out.
Turk looked over at the hospital parking lot, and then up to the clouds. Then everything went black.
The crying and screaming could be heard from miles away. As J.D held his broken, bloodied best friend in his arms everything suddenly clicked into place, the half hearted smiles, the whimpering sounds at night, the red sleeves he assumed was a patients blood.
'It's all my fault, I should have known, I should have talked to him, I could have helped him, and now it's too late.' J.D thought, in contempt and regret.
If only I'd know...
