The Beast Within

Children in homes, children in schools, laws and order; I'm there, I'm a prisoner.

Children on an island, wildness and impulse, anarchy and chaos; I'm here, I'm free.

I'm in the water, I'm on the mountain, I'm a hunter, I am you.

"You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?", and there is nothing you can do.

Don't worry, I will tell you what to do; I'll be your best friend and your worst enemy.

"There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the beast."

"The beast comes out of the sea", "Out of the dark", "Trees", they say, thinking they know me.

Lurking in the dark hours of the night, "pig's head on a stick" I'm called,

I'm the reason "why it's no go, why things are what they are".

Like mold on bread, I'm growing on souls, on minds, on you,

"So don't try to escape", I'm everywhere, "you'll only meet me down there".

You try to warn them, you try to fight me, you hope that you are wrong,

This feeling inside you can't be real, you think that I "was something you could hunt and kill".

I'm stronger than I've ever been, for now I'm all there is,

As blackbirds flying in the dark of the night, you've freed me from the dark of your soul.

I'm wide awake, and I'm here to stay.
