'When I'm out downtown
I can still hear the sound
Of a voice that sounds so familiar
Lift my head and turn around
You're nowhere to be found
Just big blue sky
And my teardrops on the ground'
But I'll be okay. I know that one day, beyond the changing seasons, beyond the world we made together, I'll see you again.
But just knowing that isn't enough. So I remember. I remember because I'm afraid to forget.
And so I came here, Weiss. Every year. So that I'll never forget the last words we had with each other.
You were always stubborn 'til the bitter end, you know that?
"…but what about the company? What if she can't handle it? She doesn't know what kind of schemes people will- mmph!"
Even when she's sick and tired, it still works!
"The company's in good hands, Weiss. We raised the future CEO ourselves, didn't we?"
I know that smile, Weiss. I know how proud you are of her.
"I-I'm just glad that she took the news so well."
"What news?"
"Six years and three months ago, you dolt…"
"Oh that. Well of course! Not every day that you get to hear you were adopted by two of the most badass huntresses in history!"
Her laugher is like music to my heart.
"Well, I guess it'll be only one badass elderly huntress soon enough."
"Elderly!? I'll have you know, I can still swing Crescent Rose as hard as the day I got it!"
I can see the joy in her lips. But I also see the sorrow behind her icy fires.
"Says the one still stuffing her face with cookies every hour of the day."
"And I have no regrets about that!"
"I do have one regret, though, Ruby."
"I'm sorry I won't be able to grow old with you."
Her cheeks were wet, but her eyes blazed hotter than ever.
"But we can. With all the time we have left…"
My blazing Ice Princess. Your body shows how warm you really are, Weiss.
"But I… I don't know how much longer we have."
"Does that really matter right now?"
I squeezed tighter, so I could feel her heart beat.
"I-I guess not."
"Mmm."
"Mmm."
Minds, bodies, and hearts in harmony… this is how we wanted to spend our last days.
"Do you mind if I sleep, Ruby?"
I could feel the thumps slowing down, fading out like the end of a song.
"Only if you don't mind me listening to your heart."
Even with my eyes closed, I could feel her nod and her arms hug me tighter.
I'll be your last teddy bear, Weiss.
I promised I'd keep you safe until the end.
The pounding stopped.
Weiss's gown was wet.
Memories of you. Your grave hasn't changed. Year after year.
It stands as strong as you did, maybe forever.
But that night, I made a promise.
"I will never leave you."
