Author's notes: I know to keep with the characters that this scene doesn't work but I felt so sorry for Wesley after Fred left his place at the end of 'Billy' I just couldn't leave him to cry by himself.
Fred paused as she rounded the corner casting an indecisive glance back down the hall at Wesley's door. She'd heard the thud of his head falling forward onto it and the half choked sob he'd uttered, imagined the hand he'd put up to block his eyes and the other over his mouth to block the cries, had seen it in her mind clear as day. Yet in her mind's eye she'd also seen him looming over her with that axe, eyes wild and mouth spewing all kinds of hateful things while she cowered on the floor. She knew it wasn't him, and yet something held her back from going to him. She'd already talked with Gunn and all was forgiven and yet Wesley...
She heard the thump, all the way from where she was standing, when he eventually slid down the wall to the floor and turned hurrying back up the hall. Who was she kidding, this was Wesley, sweet, soft spoken, smart as a whip Wesley who'd been nothing but a pillar of support for her, and now after a demon attack he was hurting, she couldn't possibly leave him to himself after all the times he'd been there for her. Turning on her heel she walked quickly back up the corridor, opening the door she knew he hadn't locked and kneeling in front of him.
"Oh Wesley." She whispered as she caught sight of him huddled into the corner. Sitting next to the ex-watcher she pulled him into her, letting his head fall to rest on her shoulder as he buried his face in her neck murmuring "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry." over and over again, his tears soaking into the fabric of her sweater as he clutched at her.
"Shh....shh...it's all right." She reassured, stroking his back soothingly, running her hands up and down the soft material of his sweatshirt, rubbing light circles at the base of his hairline.
Eventually the sobs tapered off and he found he'd cried himself out. They just sat there in silence for a few minutes letting the other calm down, Fred continuing to rock them back and forth softly.
"Fred," Wesley began embarrassedly.
"It's okay Wesley." She cut him off. "Really it is." the girl promised, giving him a squeeze.
"Thank you." He replied, relief and gratitude almost overwhelming him as he squeezed her gently back leaving his head resting quietly on her shoulder.
Fred's heart rate quickened a bit as she became more and more, acutely aware of Wesley's breath across her collarbone.
"Fred?" Wesley questioned feeling her sharp intake of breath. Lifting his head he met her eyes, their lips millimetres away from each other's, the slightest shift from either of them and they'd be touching.
"I think I'd best be going now Wesley." She announced, averting her eyes and breaking the moment.
Wesley nodded. "Okay."
"I'll see you at the office." She repeated her earlier words.
"Yes, you will." He agreed. "Oh and Fred," the girl turned back around.
"I know Wesley." She said and with a friendly smile and wave she was out the door and walking down the corridor leaving Wesley to contemplate how anyone could think females were the weaker sex.
