Pity from a Toad

Chapter 1

A:N/ Just in case you didn't know, I do not own any rights to Harry Potter, nor am I claiming to.

Neville Longbottom sat in the front seat of his grandmother's gray town car waiting for her to come back out of the Muggle flower shop. Neville was wearing a dark blue muggle suit. His pet toad, Trevor, was sitting placidly on Neville's knee and letting out a small croak every few seconds.

"How's it going Trevor? How was your school year? Better than mine I expect. It's not like you were taught the Unforgivable Curses by the guy who used them to destroy your parents."Neville said nonchalantly as he stroked Trevor's head.

"It's not like you realised that the you have to compete with not only the girl you like's best friend but also an internationally reknown Quidditch player for the affection of the girl you like." He continued to the amphibian.

He sighed loudly as he looked up to see his grandmother walking out of the flower shop.

"You'd think that she'd want to dress alittle less obvious around Muggles, huh Trevor." He said eyeing same old stuffed vulture that had adornned her hat as long as he had known her.

She had emerged from the shop carring a big bouquet of some sort of lily, Neville was surprised that he couldn't identify it's species.

"Not only that but I'm a complete joke of a wizard, Herbology is the only thing I'm good at and I don't even know what kind of lily that is. It's the same kind of flower we bring Mum everytime and I still don't know what kind it is. I'm just pathetic. I don't even have any real friends that I can talk to, just you, a stupid toad that only hangs around me because I feed you, but, well, I don't know you might pity me too I suppose."

A few momemts later, his gran opened the door to the car, handed Neville the bouquet, and got in the car.

As she turned on the engine she looked over at Neville who was staring out his window.

"You don't have to go dear." She said in an almost unfamiliar caring voice.

"I'll be fine Gran." Neville answer without looking away from the window.

The rest of the ride was silent until they reached St. Mungo's and got out of the car. Neville put Trevor in his pocket and picked up the bouquet. He looked up at the hospital where his parents had been confined for most of his life.

"Neville, are you coming?" Asked his grandmother.

"Oh, yeah, I'm coming." He answered, coming back into reality.

As they made their way up the way up the steps into the hospital, his grandmother put her hand on his shoulder and gave him a sympathetic look.

"I'm fine gran." said Neville.

They got to the check in counter and were greeted by witch behind it.

"Would you like me to escort you two to their room?" asked the nurse.

"Please." answered Neville's grandmother.

As Neville walked down the corridor, following the nurse and his grandmother, to his parent's room.

"Here you are, room 419, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Longbottom. If you need anything just buzz a nurse." said the nurse before giving Neville a look of pity that he was all to familiar with.

"Gran, can I talk to them by myself?"Neville suddenly asked.

She looked at him uncertainly then knodded.

Neville's heart began to beat faster, 'Mabye this time they'll recognise me.' He thought to himself.

'Please, god, let them recognise me.' He noticed his breathing was becoming uneven as he opened the door to his parents' room.
