Life as an Operative of Umbrella

Chapter One

My mom was looking out the sitting room window. The night was a stormy one. I was looking out of my bedroom window, hoping that nothing bad had happened to my dad. On the same night my dad swerved to miss a car and hit a crash barrier. He was taken to hospital and died two hours later. I was sixteen.

Three years later, in the mid-western town of Raccoon City working as an operative for Umbrella Inc, spying on my step-dad's company HCF came as quite a shock.

I hated my step-dad for many years. My mom was murdered four months after she remarried. There was a drive-by shooting. The gunmen wore HCF security uniforms. I didn't find out the reason why my mom was killed. All I cared about revenge.

When I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for an operative of Umbrella I jumped at the chance. I wanted to hurt my father the same way he had hurt me by murdering my mom and all the suffering I had endured for the past six months. I got the job and was told to report to the two chief researchers of Arkley Laboratories.

The two chief researchers was my boyfriend of two months, the enigmatic Albert Wesker and his best friend William Birkin, but I liked to call him Scholar Will.

Just passing J's bar, my cell phone rang and gave me a fright. It was Wesker.

"Are you there yet?" he asked impatiently. The urge to reply with something sarcastic was strong, but I knew Wesker, if he was in a bad mood it was a bad idea to be sarcastic, so I decided against it.

"Another two hours," I replied. I heard him mutter something under his breath. Birkin was also shouting in the background.

"I'll report back later," I replied and put the phone down. I hated talking to him if he was in a bad mood. It was funny, even though we were are a couple, we argued over silly little things.

Two hours later, arriving at HCF headquarters, I had mixed emotions. The receptionist, Anna, looked up from her work as I walked towards the desk as my high heels clinked on the laminated floor. She automatically knew who I wanted and told me told me to go up to his office.

As soon as I got to office, thoughts of revenge started to bubble, but I managed to control them.

My step-dad was late as usual. I looked around the office and noticed a photo frame. Curiosity got the better the better of me and I picked the photo frame up and nearly dropped it in shock. It was a picture of me, mom and him at their wedding.

He walked into the office. I excepted an apology for being late, but I didn't get one. He never ever gave an apology for anything, even for my mom's death.

"My favourite daughter has come to visit me," he joked.

I smiled, pretending to be happy to see him. We sat and talked, but he made a big mistake. He told me some secrets of the company. I secretly had a Dictaphone under the table, recording the whole conversation. This was easier than I thought. My step-dad didn't know I was working for Umbrella and was selling HCF's secrets to Umbrella.

Four hours later, I had heard everything I wanted to hear and made the excuse I had a doctor's appointment. My step-dad asked the receptionist to call me a taxi. I sat in silence as I went to Wesker's apartment to give him the tape. To be continued….
