Prelude

The rain set early in tonight. She knelt in the corner of the gazebo, alone and staring at the dusty grey sky. She could hear the grandfather clock ticking tediously inside…she had already been outside for hours.

Nonetheless of the sun, nonetheless of the heat, she was looking for some sign of his return. His movements were otherwise carefully monitored by the Council of Elders, however, she was determined that she would be able to monitor them more vigilantly. After all, she was the person closest to him.

The rain trickled slowly around the tiled roof. She reached her hand out to feel the feather touch of a bat's wing. She set it on the ground whilst others followed.

"Princess, I have heard the news…your Prince has deserted you?"

He knelt to kiss her hand but she pulled away. Her loyalty wouldn't be challenged so easily. "Who are you?"

His hair was violet; his lips were paler than hers and blended almost completely with his skin. His eyes were sharp and were piercing into her mind. He was dressed so handsomely but there prevailed no clues as to why he had perhaps come for her. Was he another pureblood? Impossible, for Kaname had been searching for all the purebloods in the council and beyond in order to assassinate them.

"Who are you?" she repeated.

"You must come with me; otherwise, you will wither."

"I am waiting for someone. I don't even know you." Her knees were plastered to the ground as she resisted ferociously. She ran into the mansion, hurriedly locking the door behind her.

"Please, you must listen to me. It is for your protection."

"I don't need any protection."

As she was outside since the morning, she hadn't noticed that there had been a letter set on the kitchen table addressed from Kaname.

Yuki, you must excuse my absence, it will only be a little bit longer before I can see you again and you can see me again. Really, that is what I'm working for right now and I really hope that you believe that.

"You must trust me; I'm here to protect you! Why don't you remember me?"

"I already remember everything that I need to remember."

"Fine." He sighed, "But I will return to prove that you need to know everything. You are being kept at nothing." If it was hypnosis, it definitely wasn't working; she wouldn't be fooled.
