Author's Notes

I normally don't write poetry, much less unstructured ones. Never really got the chance to try and get the hang of it. But I thought I'd try this one. English lectures, Sylvia Plath's poems in particular. I love the one called The Moon and the Yew Tree. And Mirrors.

I don't think I need to give you guys a lesson on poem reading, do I? Not everything is at face value, even more so than with prose. More metaphors, more symbolism, more technique…even the page breaks and rhythm have more meaning. And depending on the person reading too. If you've taken literature and had to do poem analysis, you'll know what I mean.

So…what do you guys think? See that little rectangular button at the bottom of the page? Just click that, tap in whatever comes to mind, and fire me a line.

…you know, I've always wanted to say that for some reason.

Enjoy.

Sword Dancer

See him dancing? See his sharp swords glittering with bright light, twisting, turning and flashing about? Watch him…but take care of getting too close, or you'll get cut.

Turn here a ways. Towards the sun. Can you see
Him dancing? Moving to and fro upon fate's wind?
Watch him. Watch that scarf full of stripes gay and blue
Flutter in the firm yet caressing breeze.

He dances. But it is not a wild dance, crazed, confused;
Lost, the strong defined feet tread in an exact grace.
Wrists flick with swords extending their reach
Swirling beautifully, majestically…to a blinding end.

See his sharp swords glittering with bright light
Twisting, turning and flashing about? Watch closely,
Watch the sun reflecting off that shining pillar
Of Glorified Light. Bright, dazzling…light. Light!

See him! Watch him! Feast your eyes upon this show
But take care of getting too close
Or you'll get cut. See those fine sharp swords
Spinning about, enchanting, encaptivating…

Stop your dance! Cease your steps!
How can I come even close?
Oh, slow your spin! Dim your light!
Open your cage! Let me come!

I would knock those walls down myself
But for fear of being cut.
See? See them? See my hands bleeding?
Already hurting, paining, falling, failing…

Your light is too bright, your arm too strong.
You've stopped me in my tracks.
Body moves, swords flash-
A chasm built, unyielding pass.

Weariness calls. See? Already it comes
To take away your breath. Halt now.
Instead, save your strength. Raise your head, look!
For in that darkness, I still await…
