Surprise

Jack was seated in the park waiting for Claire to show up for a Saturday date. She was running a little late, but that was forgivable considering the date required no reservations. But he still waited.

Jack gave a quick turn of his head and saw no Claire. Ah, well, it's only Saturday. We have the whole weekend together. His thoughts remained uninterrupted as he sat there. He just waited and waited. When he realized Claire was probably going to be running a little bit later than he anticipated, he stood up. He wandered towards the coffee stand slowly, giving himself a walk to take his mind off his impatience.

Claire arrived in time to see him get up. She knew he must not have seen her in the busy park, but she decided to not let him know of her appearance. She had the maneuver all mapped out in her head. She set off in a run and jumped onto Jack's back, rendering him breathless. "Jesus Christ!" he shouted.

"What have I told you about screaming the lord's name in vain?" asked Claire.

"Oh you're one to talk."

"What I say in bed should never leave the bedroom."

"Duly noted." He reached his head around and kissed her hello. "Why didn't you call out?"

"Surprise!" she exclaimed like a child. Her grin was turning childish and playful. Jack only smiled. He carried her on his back on the way to the coffee stand. She leaped down from it when they asked for two of them. When they received the piping hot beverage, Claire laced her fingers in Jack's as they walked and admired the leaves popping out of the branches of the trees. Claire kissed Jack's cheek at one point. Jack smiled shyly. Claire smiled triumphantly. She rested her head on his shoulder and he slipped her free arm around her waist as soon as they found an empty park bench.

Jack heard an audible hum in his shoulder. "That was the best surprise of the day," he whispered to her.

"Oh just you wait," she scolded. "There's more to come, Jack." She sat up, sipped her coffee to prevent any sloshing, and rested her head back on his shoulder. "I love you Jack."

"I love you too," he said, nudging her with his nose. She giggled and purred into his shoulder.
