Author's Note: An angsty drabble that centers on Sasuke's thoughts after he learns the truth about Itachi and the Uchiha massacre. There are obviously spoilers, so don't read further if you don't want them. Very short, but I was in the mood for something depressing and short. Not to mention, this scene in the manga, and the anime, always chokes me up.
I don't own Naruto, or the characters. They belong to Masashi Kishimoto. On with the story!
Forever an Avenger
By: Angel Wings-008
It wasn't fair.
He knew it was childish to allow this despair when there were tasks yet to be done. How many times had he admonished Naruto, for being stupid? Sakura, for being weak? It served no purpose to dwell on your mistakes, for no matter how hard you tried, in the end, it changed nothing. No matter how deep your regret or how heavy your despair, there was no taking it back. He'd learned that the hard way. He knew all of these things, and yet now, none of them seemed to matter.
It wasn't fair.
It wasn't fair that Itachi had suffered for a village of faceless people who would forever curse his name, blind to the truth that their leaders held from them. It wasn't fair that his honorable, fearsome clan had been reduced to something so tainted and disgraceful. It wasn't fair that his brother had been forced to bear these heavy burdens alone.
It wasn't fair that his life had been so cruel, that everything he'd lived for all these years was nothing but a lie. Tears streamed unchecked down his face for the first time in longer than he cared to remember, but Sasuke didn't bother to resist. He wept for his clansmen, he wept for himself, but most of all, he wept for Itachi, victim of a disgusting political game.
A sense of bitter irony plunged headlong into his thoughts, intensifying the sorrow of the moment he was in. He had turned his back on the light; a light that did not exist. What did it matter whose side he was on? There were no sides. There was only this twisted, evil world, crawling with miserable souls that were shrouded in darkness. Sasuke was as lost as they were, bred by the undying hatred of humanity itself.
Only one thing kept him breathing; living, if you could call it that, though tragically, it was the same thing that had led him here today. It was all he had left, and he saw no reason to change it.
Sasuke was relentless; forever an avenger.

Thanks so much for reading! If there is anything at all you'd like to suggest that I improve on, you're more than welcome to. I do hope I have Sasuke characterized well. I truly believe I have done him justice. I always found it very sad, what the world has turned Sasuke into. Anyway, reviews are always appreciated ^_^
