I was walking home from school to my house by myself. My father Drew Misham was out of town for the day so I would have the whole house to myself. I wasn't too frightened, after all I am almost ten years old.
"You don't move!" I turned to see a bulky man. He looked scary, but my father said never talk to strangers so I continued on to my house. "Maybe you didn't understand. I said stay!" He took my arm and dragged me.
"What are you-!" I said.
"QUIET!" he bellowed. I knew what was happening at that second. He was trying to kidnap me.
"SOMEONE PLEASE! HELP ME." Tears filled my eyes.
Just then I felt a slap but it seemed to be for the man. I turned my head to see women with hair that was a lighter shade of blue than mine, and a jump rope.
"That's just low," she said, she sounded cold, yet she seemed to want to help. "Kidnapping a defenseless child. I would think you try someone older."
"Well if I didn't know better I'd think you had a heart," the man said mockingly. "Especially who your-" He was cut off when she hit him with her jump rope.
"Let go of her right now or I'll do worse to you than whip you," she said icily. Just than she came up and punched him. He let go of me and ran off. She sighed. "Hey are you ok kleines Mädchen?" She turned gentle, but I was scared out of my wits. "It's ok I promise. I won't do anything to hurt you. Believe me I know the feeling."
"That man….. who was he" I stuttered.
"I wish I knew," she said turning away. "Do want to go home?" I cringed. "Or I can get someone on the police force to take you, if that's what you want." She really seemed gentle.
"I want my dad," I whimpered.
"We can call your dad."
"Can you take me home?" I asked.
"Sure" she said as she took my hand, and together we walked back to my place.
When we got back to my house I asked the women if she could stay. No just because I was frightened to be left alone, but it seemed that she too needed help.
"What's your name?" she asked when I hung up her jacket.
"Vera Misham."
"That's a nice name," she said. I smiled.
"Thank you." I took out a movie that I watched when my mother left my father. She went to the phone. She talked to someone. I could make out her part of the conversation.
"Scruffy I need you to do something… There was an attempted kidnapping.
….Yes the girl is safe… I brought her home at her request.…. Her name Vera Misham…. Yes I need you to find her father and tell him to come home…. I'll stay with her so nothing will happen to her… Thank you." She turned to me and smiled. "Someone is getting a hold of your father the estimated time around 90 minutes.
"Thank you," I repeated. I sowed her the movie that I picked out earlier. She nodded at the choice- Mulan-. We watched it. The women smiled at parts and looked down at others. After the movie was over I spoke out. "Are you ok?" She looked at me.
"Why do you ask?"
"It seems that you too are in pain." She sighed.
"If I must tell you then I will." She said. "I lost someone about six months ago and I want to find him. Though he'll probably never wants to see me again."
"Why?" I asked.
"My father did something terrible to his father," She said solemnly. "He left. I know he's still out there I have to see him again. I have to find out if he still wants me as his 'big' sister."
"If you didn't do anything to him or his father," I began, "Then he should not hate you." She smiled.
"I know but everyone worries about these things." Just then the door opened.
"Father!" I screamed with delight.
"Vera!" He ran to hug me. Then he turned to the women. "Thank you so much. Is there anything I can do?"
"Take care of your daughter," she said as she turned to leave.
"Wait" I said. She turned back. "What if I need you?" She smiled coming back to me.
"If you need me here's my card." She said. "Call me anytime." Then she left. I looked at the card that night. I was her business card.
