Riggs walked her to the door. "So we actually made it through dinner without you calling it off." he laughed. "I gotta say, I'm impressed." She turned to face him as they reached the door. "So, do you hate me?" he asked sarcastically, "Or do you like hanging out?"

"I had a good time, Nathan" she smiled at him. "I guess you're not so bad."

"Wow I think that's the nicest you've ever been to me."

"Don't let it go to your head." she smirked.

They stood there for a few minutes, just looking at each other.

"Goodnight, Nathan" Mer whispered.

"Goodnight." Riggs kissed her softly. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow." He walked back to his car, and she slipped into the house.

That night she had a dream. It wasn't her usual miracle dream, where derek knocks on the door, forgot his keys. No this time she was in the car with him. They were talking.

"So you like him" Derek said calmly.

Meredith looked at him "I didn't say that." She looked around. They could get out of the car. She could prevent the crash from ever happening in the first place.

"You didn't have to" he brushed the hair off her face. "It's ok, you know."

"Derek let's go. We can go. It doesn't have to happen."

"You know that's not real. That wouldn't solve anything," he smiled that stupid McDreamy smile.

"Derek please," she whimpered frantically. "I love you."

"Meredith, you know how this is going to end," he said "There's nothing you can do to change it."

"But I love you."

"Tell me about this new guy."

"What?"

"Nathan right? Nathan Riggs."

"He's a new cardiothoracic surgeon at the hospital." Meredith finally gave in.

"Yeah? And you like him?" Derek pressed on.

"I think so yeah I like him" She looked at her husband. "I still love you."

"Meredith you're always going to love me. That doesn't mean you can't move on with your life and be happy."

Meredith could see the semi now, barrelling towards the car.

"Meredith look at me. Let yourself be happy. Don't tie yourself down to a ghost forever. That's no way to live." Meredith looked at him with panic and tears in her eyes. "Get out of the car Meredith."

"I don't want to leave you."

"I'll always be with you, in your heart. But you deserve to live. You deserve to be happy again. You deserve love. But you have to get out of the car."

The semi was getting too close. Meredith suddenly found herself outside the car. All she could do was watch as it hit.

Meredith woke with a start to the sound of her pager going off. Crap she thought. She couldn't help but notice that her heart felt a little lighter as she got dressed and drove to the hospital.
