The sun shone through the dirty windows of Hagwart's library as we sat together in silence. I listened to the almost rhythmic scratching of her quill while I shuffled through pages of a research text to help me with my essay on the House Elf Laws of 1329, and how they differed (or not) in todays wizard sosciety. She had finished hers a couple of days ago, while I chose to procrastinate and was therefor paying the price. After ten minutes of complaining loudly about it, she offered to keep me comany, and the library was the only nuetral place we could be together while I worked on this essay. She sat across from me as she wrote out a long letter to someone, and whenever her quill would stop, I would look up at her to see a look of deep concentration on her face as she thought. I would smile, and then I would go back to the book and gather the notes I needed from there.
We weren't supposed to be friends, nor am I supposed to feel for her in the way that I did... But we were, and I did. She never knew, as far as I was aware. I had done all that was in my power to keep her from finding that out. To be in love with another witch was one thing, but to be in love with her... Well, I know what the outcome of my confessions would have been if I ever had the courage to let them leave my trempling lips. As it were, we got teased just for being friends. She didn't seem to care about that, and I decided soon afterwards that I didn't, either. In that library on a sunny Saturday mid-morning, I was content to stay with her in that easy silence as we got through our tasks. Part of me let my heart wander into a short daydream where sometime in the next few minutes, one of us would slowly move her hand to the middle of the table between us and wait as the other's fingers, in turn, would meet in the middle before they intertined in a link never to be broken. I swallowed as I mentally shook the thought away, but it had been a nice thought, one that I would give anything to have in my reality...
If only for a moment.
