An angsty Maquis anthem. I think of it as the song you might hear a protester singing in front of the courthouse the day Chakotay and his Maquis crew are placed on trial. As with so many of my songs, my husband Chuck deserves credit for the original idea.
A Maquis Ballad
(tune: "One Tin Soldier," a.k.a. "The Ballad of Billy Jack")
Listen, Earthers, to a story
That took place not long ago
'Bout a planet on the border
Left to face a brutal foe
While the planet had some treasures
Fertile lands and crystals bright
They had no one to protect them
Though alone they could not finght
Go ahead and make your treaties
Help a foe and hurt a friend
If it saves the Federation
You think that's the only worthy end
What good is a Federation
That can turn its own away?
Can you wash your bloody hands now
Of all those your choices slay?
So they joined with other planets
And they called themselves Maquis
Said, "We will stand with our brothers
And together we'll stay free"
Bravely they faced down the Cardies
Fought for love and home and pride
Though Starfleet, which should have helped them,
Took up arms on Cardies' side
Then Dominion joined the Cardies
They wiped out the DMZ
Now there's not a man left standing
On those worlds that once were free
Next they turned on Federation
Just as Cardies had before
All their weakness and betrayal
Had bought Starfleet total war
Go ahead and make your treaties
Help a foe and hurt a friend
If it saves the Federation
You think that's the only worthy end
What good is a Federation
That can turn its own away?
Can you wash your bloody hands now
Of all those your choices slay?
