Change Gets To You
A High School Musical fan fiction
Chapter 1:
Memories
Troy Bolton looked over at the truck on the curb. "That car could use a fresh coat of paint… or two."
Chuckling, Coach Bolton, Troy's father and East High basketball coach, looked up from reading the Albuquerque Journal. "Hey, I don't blame you. That thing was actually my dad's. He never really liked taking care of it, unless he had to. One time, the engine actually failed on a date of his. He was devastated. His date, lucky for him, knew all about cars, and volunteered to actually take it to a shop. But, oh, boy was he in for a surprise. It actually cost way more than he made babysitting kids from the neighborhood. And he was up in the mountains, too!"
Troy sighed, "I know, dad. Grandpa actually told me that story." "Did he now?" Troy sat back down on the couch, crossing his legs and holding one of them up. "He did. He told me that the shop owner actually repaired it for free—and gave him a coupon for the date."
Mrs. Bolton enters the room with a tray of cookies and milk. "Besides, your father never took that thing out much, either, Jack."
"Leslie, please. The only reason why is because he never got out much—except for school, dates, tournaments, PTA meetings…"
Mrs. Bolton stuck a cookie in Jack's mouth. "Ah! See what I mean. You always disagree with me."
Troy sighed. He knew what was coming. "Later."
In his room a few minutes later, his cell phone rings with the tone of Can I Have This Dance? He picked it up and smiled. "Hey, Wildcat!"
Gabriella giggled. "Hey, yourself. I just wanted to check up on you. My mom's taken me back to Stanford to look at the classes."
Troy winced. "Ouch. Sounds kind of boring."
"Maybe, but some of them are really fun. I still have chemistry, algebra, and of course, homeroom."
Troy laughed. "Who can ever forget homeroom? That's how we met… for the second time."
They reminisce back to the day that they met… the second time.
Troy noticed Gabriella and decided to call her up. But as he did, the cell phone rings loudly as Sharpay and Ryan Evans, the school's drama club president and co-president, takes out their cell phones, as well as Gabriella.
"Ah, the cell phone menace has returned to our crucible of learning… Sharpay, Ryan, cell phone, and I will see you in detention," Mrs. Darbus, the homeroom teacher announces. Walking over towards Gabriella, she continues. "We have zero tolerance for cell phones in class. Cell phone!" Gabriella puts her cell phone in the bucket marked "Cell-itary confiment." "And welcome to East High, Miss Montez." She notices Troy.
"Mr. Bolton, I see your phone is involved, so we will see you in detention, as well."
His best friend, Chad Danforth, raised his hand. "Uh, that's not possible, Mrs. Darbus. See, we have basketball practice and Troy…"
Mrs. Darbus cut him off. "That'll be 15 minutes for you, Mr. Danforth."
Taylor McKessie, future friend of Gabriella, whispers. "That could be tough for Chad, since he probably can't count that high."
"Taylor McKessie, 15 minutes!" Mrs. Darbus warns as Taylor gasps. "Shall the carnage continue? Holidays are over—WAY over! Now… any comments? Questions?"
Jason Cross, the school's not-so-bright kid, raises his hand shyly. "Yes, Jason?"
"So, how were your holidays, Ms. Darbus?" The class looked over at him in disbelief, all for except Gabriella, who silently giggled.
Giggling, Gabriella smiles. "Yeah, poor old Jason never did pick the right timing, did he?"
Troy chuckled. "Yeah, you could say that again!" Laughing, the two remembered more of the dramatic sophomore year.
