Disclaimer- I do not own anything of the Hobbit, the only thing I do own is this short story. The Hobbit belongs to it's respectable owners.
Marching footsteps and the quiet tap of an elk were all that was heard as the Elvenking atop of his mighty elk headed back towards Mirkwood. Lord Thranduil, with his soul-piercing eyes, he walked along entering his beautiful forest. His battle won, he returned with still a strong number of his elvish soldiers. He stopped at the entrance of his realm. He signaled the elves return as he moved his gaze to the wooden statue of his lost love.
His mind racing back to that fateful day, the day his world was turned upside down. His young son's terrified screams etched into his memory. The day he found her in a pool of her own blood in the kingdoms garden. Thranduil was taken from his thoughts as his trusty elk snorted, confused as to why they stopped. Thranduil stopped thinking and gave his elk a love tap from his heels, a signal to get walking. Thranduil returned and quickly counted his elves. Seeing as their number was still strong.
"Sometimes you win...
The Queen and Prince were out in the garden. Legawen was resting against a tree reading a book. About something Legolas did not understand. The young prince had climbed the tree looking over the garden at its beauty. Then, looking down at his mother reading, smiling . As she noticed this and looked up at Legolas.
"What is it my little leaf?" She said softly, gazing up at her son. Legolas was still looking down at her, but then switched his gaze to behind her. He suddenly dropped the smile he had and quickly dropped down off the tree. She noticed this and turned around to see a large pale orc. It stepped out of the forest and Legawen quickly stood up.
"Legolas go, quickly." She said in a rushed voice. Unknown to them both was the elvenking on his way back from battle. As they just about reached the entrance to his kingdom, he heard his son's scream. He quickly looked up and took off for his palace doors. Jumping from his elk and running into the garden, seeing his melda in a pool of her own blood. He quickly ran toward her and dropped to his knees next to her. She looked up at him with a pale face. Her long silvery hair in her face, he moved her hair and cupped her cheek.
"Melda...Wh..what happened?" Thranduil said with a very shaky voice. He was about to let the tears flow, but he knew he had to be strong in front of her. She couldn't answer, she was quickly losing consciousness, slipping in and out of black. She cupped his cheek and uttered her last words.
"Meleth Nîn." Legawin whispered as she looked at her husband one last time. Her hand went limp and fell from his face. She was gone. He then let his tears fall and looked over to his crying son. As the two cried together, Thranduil vowed to never let anything happen to his son.
...and sometime's you learn."
