Sasuke's Second Thoughts

I love you so much!

These words rang in his head, again and again as he walked past the much too familiar gates of Konohagakure. The wide doors always remained open, as if asking to be passed through by strangers and deserters alike.
"Why... Why can't I stop thinking about her... about what she said?"

Sasuke scuffed his feet as the forest grew toward him, keeping him from sight as a moved farther and farther away from his home.
"Why did she try to stop me like that... Why does she still keep bothering me?"

He rose his head and looked up toward the hills, lit only by the bright moonlight far behind them. Several shadowy figures stood on top, as if waiting. Searching for something.
This was where he was to go.
"I've never talked to her outside our missions... So why does she always..."

Sasuke stopped for a moment, turning his head to look over his shoulder at the place he had called home his entire life. It may be years before he even saw it again. And by that time, he would be the enemy.
"What makes her so... stuck to me?"

Everything he would do now would be for that power... The incomparable strength and power that he would be granted for the single purpose of destroying his older brother mercilessly.
"As if she could understand me... My heart decided on revenge. I don't walk the same path as those two."

Heaving a light sigh, he turned his back to the village and continued, through the trees and brush and up the slowly climbing hill. He had with him nothing but a pack, filled with various items and pieces of clothing. Yet, he still carried his Headband in his pocket. Sasuke didn't know why he decided to bring the item... He might later say because it would serve its purpose in future battles, and so he only saw it has another piece of protection. But inside, perhaps... Perhaps there was a deeper reason that even he couldn't admit to himself.
"There's no turning back now... I'll return when I've gained that power. When I've become the strongest, and then..."

I love you so much!

In truth, Sasuke appreciated Sakura's efforts, although he had already made his decision to leave. He would never admit how close he had grown to his two teammates, despite how little it may have seemed. They were the first people he could depend on since his own family... They, had become his family. Those he could depend on. That he could fight for. That he could fight with. He had gained new bonds; new ties for those whom he was with. And now, he would be cutting this ties completely, for his own purposes.
"And then... I'll avenge my clan."

Sasuke finally reached the top of the mountain where 4, shadowy figures sat, kneeled in waiting. "We've been waiting for you, Sasuke-Sama..."

So, why did I write this?
Mostly, out of boredom. ;

But, I've been wondering how honest Sasuke always is with himself. Despite the fact that he was leaving, and the fact that he seemed willing and ready to cut his ties with his friends, he gave Sakura that chance to talk with him. To beg him to stay, despite his decision. He thanked her before leaving her, regardless of his method of doing so.
Instead of killing Naruto, he let him live. And as I mentioned in this story, he still carried his headband with him (as we all see in the Naruto and Sasuke fight later).
I imagine Sasuke may have had quite the battle inside himself before he finally decided to leave Konohagakaru to gain that power he required.

And yes, I realize this one-shot may be drifting a little away from Sasuke's usual personality, but I thought maybe it would be something along these lines.

I originally had no intention of submitting this, but someone I respect as a writer told me that it was really good, so I figured it wouldn't hurt.
