Wizards in Winter

A/N- Yes, we know it isn't Christmas, but Merlin is good any time. Yes? Anyway, hope you like it. Thanks, Anglophiles

(Wizards in Winter is a song by the Trans- Siberian Orchestra, if you like Christmas, rock symphony, you should check them out.) We in no way own Merlin or Trans-Siberian Orchestra song title.

Merlin slowly walked down the hall to Arthur's chambers. He knocked quietly and only entered after Arthur had invited him.

Merlin silently set the breakfast tray on the table, neatly arranging the food.

Arthur and Gwen were both awake and and laughing with the excitement of the day. It was Christmas Eve.

"Morning ,Merlin!",Arthur said boisterously.

Merlin barely smiled a greeting to Arthur as he continued to set the breakfast table.

"Merlin?",Gwen asked with concern.

Merlin stopped and acknowledged his queen.

"Is something wrong?"

"No,my lady.",Merlin answered in a hollow voice. Finished with breakfast,Merlin asked permission to leave to "attend to other duties".

Arthur nodded and Merlin left without another word.

"What's wrong with him?",Arthur quipped, almost amused at his servant's gloomy behavior. "It's Christmas Eve."

"He's been acting this way for weeks, now.I'm worried about him.",Gwen answered.

"I hope he won't ruin the party tonight with his sour mood.",Arthur pouted.

"I have an idea that after he receives my gift,he'll be a changed man."Gwen said confidently.

Merlin watched all the happy people at the castle's Christmas Eve party. They were all laughing and enjoying each others company. He tried to smile, but watching everyone else just made things worse.

He hadn't meant to be so down, but he couldn't help but remember the simple Christmases in Ealdor. He was so homesick for his hometown, but especially for his mother.

As he stood by the wall,he didn't notice the single tear rolling down his cheek. He didn't notice, but Gwen did.

She walked quietly towards him, taking his hand and leading him out of the room.

"Merlin,what's wrong?"

Merlin looked at the floor to hide his now overflowing tears, shaking his head slightly.

"Merlin...",Gwen said ,lifting face to hers. "It's okay.I understand, I've seen it in your eyes for the past month...you miss your mother."

When Gwen said this, something in Merlin broke. He began to sob on Gwen's shoulder.

Gwen held her friend, allowing him to cry until he felt better. Merlin finally was able to look at his friend and smile a tearful smile.

"Thanks, Gwen..."

"I'm always here for you Merlin, you know that."

"I know."

Gwen again took Merlin's hand, taking him further away from the noise of the party. "You know,Merlin, I was going to wait and give you your Christmas present tomorrow, but I really think you should have it now."

Gwen led Merlin to a door down the hall and motioned for him to go inside.

Hesitantly,Merlin opened the door. The room was beautifully furnished and sitting in the chair near the fireplace was his mother.

Merlin ran to his mother's warm embrace, burying his face in her long hair.

Gwen smiled at Hunith, who mouthed "thank you" to her. Gwen quietly shut the door allowing mother and son a private reunion.

Gwen made her way back to the party,a smile on her face.

She hugged Arthur tightly. He looked back at her quizzically.

"What have been up to?",He asked.

"Oh,just giving Merlin his Christmas present."
