Fathers Day.
…
Blair pulled on her father's hand, dragging him over to talk to Mr Archibald. She hung to her father's hand and stared at Nate. Looking around, Chuck saw Bart talking to the principle, but also noticed the absence of a certain blonde hurricane. Looking around curiously, Chuck went in search of Serena Van Der Woodsen.
He found her hiding behind the bike shed, red ribbon lying in the dirt, and knees drawn to her chest. He couldn't see her face, but she sniffled lightly, hinting to him that she was crying. Silently he knelt beside her and placed his hand carefully on her shoulder. He could feel her shuddering beneath the material of her dress. Dropping to sit in the dirt beside her, Chuck picked up the ribbon and placed it in his pocket. Serena looked sideways at the boy beside her and sniffled again, causing him to loop one arm around her shoulders in a gesture of comfort.
More tears rolled down her cheeks, and Chuck found his handkerchief and wiped them away tenderly, causing the blonde to smile slightly. He placed the handkerchief into her smooth hands and wrapped her body in his arms. Because even at age seven, he knew that she was heartbroken, and he knew it was due to her father's disappearance.
She wiped her tears away once more with his handkerchief and Chuck stood, offering his hand to Serena. Laughing, she grabbed it and allowed him to pull her to her feet. Together they walked back towards the gang of fathers and students.
Bart noticed his son appearing from behind the shed with a little blonde girl who was in a bright red dress and jeans. Suddenly Chuck stopped and pulled a red ribbon from his pocket, he tied it in a bow around the blonde girl's ponytail and Bart watched as they both smiled. It was the first time Bart had ever seen the gentle side of his son, the first time that he could remember witnessing his son's sincerity. So when Chuck and the blonde reached the families, Bart invited her to sit with them. That was also the first time in years he'd had seen his son smile at him, and as he watched Chuck pull out the chair for the little girl Bart discovered that his son wasn't who he'd thought he was, at least not around this girl.
Bart soon discovered that the little girls name was Serena, and she was a Van Der Woodsen. He'd heard the gossip from the Misty about Mr Van Der Woodsen abandoning his family, and running off. But the little girl, Serena, put on a strong face and between her and Chuck, for that day, Bart was treated just the way he'd always wished.
When Serena arrived home, Lilly was surprised to find her happy. Serena smiled and told Lilly about her day, all the while holding a handkerchief tight in her hand. That's when Lilly realised that Serena didn't really need her father, not with friends like Chuck looking out for her.
Note: Once again I wasn't sure how to end it, so this will have to do. I apologise for my endings all being pretty shotty of late. Please review.
