They were crouched down in a darkened corner of the room playing thumb wars with one another, while the bombs and the screams were going on over their heads. They could hardly see one another through the thick grey smoke and the darkness that coated them, but still they managed to make eye contact. Behind their determined smiles and their battling thumbs, fear, guilt and an overwhelming surge of love was refelcted in their eyes. His other hand, which had been dropped to his side, reached up and cuped her cheek softly in his palm, as his thumb trailed slowly across her bottom lip.
He thought he could see her chest rise and fall with a soft sigh, through the thick haze that surrounded them. He was doing everything that he could to protect her and keep her safe, because he'd never forgive himself if any harm ever came to her. She was the only bright spot in his life, the only thing good that made sense and he'd promised himself that she would never be marred with anything that might hurt her. That part of his life, would not touch her.
Still, though, if the questions arose in her eyes, her body language told him otherwise as she turned her face in towards his hand and scooted her body closer to his, as they huddled underneath the table pressing their bodies as close to each other as they could get, ancient thumb wars forgotten as his lips softly brushed her forehead and his free hand burshed her hair out of her face. Even in imminent danger, she was more beautiful and possessed more strength than he'd actually given her credit for.
A smirk touched his lips for a breif moment, as he rested his chin atop her head and his arm wound tightly around her body seeking her warmth and trying to secure her safely to him as he did that night in the hospital when he'd thought there was a chance he could sheild her from a bullet, if Clark could only see her now without the blinders, he wouldn't recognize the woman he was looking at.
