There was something in his eyes, this stranger. A glimmer of mystery had passed across them, just for a second, before fading away into the depths of his mind. I only realized that I had been staring when he grabbed his coffee and joined someone at a table. My eyes trailed him for a second, before the girl he was with shot me a dirty look, causing me to rapidly look away, blushing.
I couldn't help but pay attention to the conversation he was having. I don't know why I felt such a strong, immediate connection, but it was there, and I was hyper-aware of his presence. He seemed distracted, talking to this girl, like his mind was somewhere miles away, and she was visibly irritated by it.
"Miss, your coffee?" The barista leaned over the counter. Flustered, I grabbed the drink, smiling at him, and rushed towards the door, trying not to look over at the stranger.
But then I dropped something, as I always do. This time, it was my wallet, still halfway open, and change had rolled to all corners of the room. I felt defeated, and picked it up, and angrily stuffed it into my purse, willing to give up however much money I had lost just to spare myself some dignity.
Then, beside me, the stranger appeared, cheerily picking up my change, and handing it to me as he went. The girl he was with seemed aggravated enough, so I wasn't surprised to see her walk past me. But as she did I heard her whisper something into the stranger's ear.
"Honestly, Doctor, we don't have all day. I'll be waiting outside."
"See you, Donna!" He said, cheerily, as he placed the remaining change in my hand.
When his eyes met mine, I saw that glimmer again. I mumbled a thank you and hurried away, as to avoid further embarrassment. But when I turned the corner at the end of the street, he was there, a big blue box behind him.
"Would you like to see the universe?" I laughed for a moment, before I realized he was serious, then I slowly started to back away.
"I have to get to work." I lied.
"Fine." He said, a whine in his voice. Then, suddenly, the sky erupted in flames, and screams rang out through the small town. He smiled at me, this Doctor, and grabbed my hand, then with an inexplicable excitement in his voice, he whispered one word.
"Run."
