Looking back, he realizes how alike he and Malcolm are. Both dated Ruby, frequented the 602 Club, and have little sisters. But on the subject of families, they are completely different.

Trip's clan is comprised of eccentric, wear-my-heart-on-my-sleeve, sociable folks from the American Deep South. Malcolm describes his family as distant and cold, especially his father. Trip cannot imagine what it was like for Malcolm to grow up in a family he could not feel comfortable around.

He says he feels comfortable with the Enterprise crew. They are now his family.
