AN: This is in response to the 10 drabbles, 10 themes challenge on the HPFC. The prompt I chose to write for this time was the single piece of dialogue "yes". The characters I chose to write for are Lily Evans and James Potter.
James knew that he looked a little ridiculous knelt down on one knee in front of Lily Evans, but he did not care. He was determined to have one date with the only girl that he had feelings for, and if that meant getting down in that ridiculous position that he had seen a muggle man get into as he held a small box that he opened for a woman, then so be it. If that muggle woman said yes to that man who knelt down in front of her, then Lily would say yes too, right?
He decided to take his chances on a Tuesday evening, in the week leading up to the first Hogsmeade weekend in October. He knew that it was a long shot, Lily had always turned down his advances, but he hoped that this time, things would be different. Throughout the day, James wrote out what he wanted to say to Lily, even practicing it on Sirius who would give him some great advice about how to properly woo a member of the opposite sex.
However, all words failed him when he had gone through with his plan near the fireplace where Lily and her friends sat warming themselves from the cold autumn wind that rattled the windows and caused the room to be a little chilly. He knelt down before Evans, his left hand holding hers and forgot what he had put on that piece of parchment. The heartfelt words that he had taken great pain to write and perfect for this evening were beside Sirius on that table in the corner of the room.
Not one to give up, especially given the circumstances, he decided to improvise instead. As he held Lily's hand in his, he met her green eyes and spoke words that truly came from the heart. He didn't need that stupid piece of parchment with those simple words of endearments, with that half thought out plea for Evans to date him attached as an almost afterthought.
When it came to James asking her out for a date that weekend, however, Lily surprised him by leaning forward and kissing him on the cheek.
"Yes," she said, her face breaking out in a wide smile that made him grin back in response. "Yes, I'll go out with you now."
