I'm back! After a long break full of holidays and writers block I have finally finished a new story...hope you enjoy it!
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter.
It had happened again. Lily was sitting at his bedside in St Mungo's after another battle between the Order and the Death Eaters. Lily was in despair with her husband, he had gotten injured for the fourth time because he was too busy keeping one eye on Lily than focusing on the fight. James had to realised that she was quite capable of taking care of herself.
Suddenly she heard a groan and looked up. James was beginning to wake up. As he opened his eyes, she could see him take in his surroundings and slowly begin to realise what had happened.
He turned his head to look at her and croaked "How much trouble am I in?"
"Loads." Lily replied.
"Look Lils..." He began.
"No, you look James Potter. I am quite capable of taking care of myself, more capable of you are by the looks of it. So please just keep you eyes on the fight and not on me because that way we'll both get home in one piece. I hate going into fights knowing you're not focused, which means I'm not focused and chances are if you don't promise to focus we'll both be lying side by side in here next time. Or worse. So promise me you will look out for yourself, and only yourself next time. Please."
"Lily, I know you're more than capable..."
"Then why do you do it?!"
"Is it so wrong that I want to protect you?"
"James, no but the problem is..."
"I'm not strong enough for the both of us. I know. I just wish I was"
"Yes" Lily whispered.
Silence fell over them as James was taking in everything she had said. Lily knew she had hurt his pride but if that was what it took to keep him alive then she would do it again. Lily looked up to see James staring at the ceiling, jaw clenched. In an attempt to make him feel better she grabbed his hand and squeezed it. The only reaction from him was then tensing of his arm. Lily released his hand sighing. There was no point trying to make up with him when he was in one of these moods. He was too stubborn and she knew right now he just wanted to sit and stew. And so to allow him to do this she announced she was going to visit Marlene who had also been injured in the fight.
As Lily turned the corner towards Marlene's room a wailing filled her ears. She was suddenly thrown against the wall as Healers rushed passed her and filed into Marlene's room. A sinking feeling filled Lily. She couldn't lose her, she had been her best friend since first year. She ran to the door where she was stopped by a healer telling her she couldn't enter. Frantic and worried for her friend she yelled and screamed but was still denied access. After several long minutes of pacing and attempts to see in the room the healers left Marlene's room. For a minute Lily thought everything was fine and she would walk in to find Marlene sitting up in bed ready to rant about Sirius Black and how it washes fault she was sitting in this bed. Then she took one look at the grave faces ohm the Healers and knew that none of that would happen. All it took was one "I'm sorry" to set the tears flowing.
Lily wandered her way back at James' room blinded by tears. When she arrived there, he immediately sat up with a concerned look on his face before asking the question that always seemed to be on everybody's lips nowadays. "Who?"
"Marlene" Lily choked.
Within seconds Lily was swept up onto the hospital bed and wrapped in James' arms. They lay there in silence for hours while Lily wept herself dry and James let all the emotions run through his mind. He couldn't break down here in front of Lily. She needed his strength right now.
"Someday." He said out of the blue.
"What?" Lily murmured confused.
"Someday I will be strong enough for the both of us"
Previews would be lovely!
