Discalaimer: Not mine

Author's Note: This is a translation of a beautiful Hindi song from the film Pyaasa sung by Hemant Kumar and picturised on Guru Dutt, Jaane woh kaise. It is a rather mediocre translation and does no credit to the song. I was bored, had nothing to do, so I translated it and uploaded it as a Snape/Lily poem on . If you like it I recommend watching the real thing on YouTube.

What sort of people were those, I wonder,

Who were loved by their love?

When I had asked for flower buds,

I was presented a garland of thorns.

*

I aspired to a goal of happiness,

But obtained the dust of misery instead.

Hoped for songs of affection,

Instead was rewarded with cold sighs.

The burden of my heart increased two-fold,

By the sharer of my sadness.

*

All of my companions left me,

After keeping me company for mere moments.

Who has the time to take the hand

Of a ridiculous mad man?

Even my shadow often let go of me.

*

If this is what is called living,

I'll continue to live this way.

Won't make a sound, seal my lips,

Drink my tears away.

Why should I fear sorrow

When I have been handed it a hundred times?

*

When I asked for flower buds,

I was presented a garland of thorns.
