Eyes the color of dust as it coats the top of your bookshelves and heirlooms, like the dull clouds that conceal the sky's face before a thunder storm. The speaker waved his hands about in the air to emphasize the detail of his message as he spoke animatedly, describing the plot of a book with words too intricate for the other's young mind couldn't comprehend. Faint bruising of a grey tone skimmed the top of his skin across his cheekbone and lower lid but the speaker didn't acknowledge its presence. His recollection faltered when the sun's westward descent began to be overtaken by the waning moon's rise.
"I-I've got to go." The boy insisted, hurriedly stuffing a weathered novel into a faded rucksack.
"Okay, see ya tomorrow Kaneki!" The other who had been so patiently listening sang as he smiled and began gathering his supplies into a bright green backpack. He waved as his friend hurried away down the cracked pavement of the empty schoolyard.
OoO
Water collected in the curves of his face and salty wet tears rolled down his cheeks, racing each other, rolling over and over onto themselves and sliding off the curve of his chin. Sincere condolences of "Sorry for your loss" and "She's in a better place now" fell on deaf ears as the adolescent mourner stared on at his mother's final resting bed. A reassuring squeeze of his hand caused him to look away into the bright chocolate-brown eyes of his best friend. His gaze cast downward again and the accompanying blond tried his best to console him into higher spirits but was soon pulled away by his parents. As guests and old friends gradually trickled away, there stood only the dark haired child, alone, until he too was carried away by another relative.
OoO
Elation beyond description and a smile that could light up an entire stage as Hide pointed to the both of their names tacked to the information board. Muttered congratulations and jealous stares were directed to the remaining students clustering together to celebrate their successes.
"I told you we'd both get in!" Said blond cheered and his companion smiled softly in amusement. The school bell rang and both left the scene, one with his arm draped over the other's shoulders and the other with ears blushing pink at the contact.
OoO
"Hello-oo-o, are you paying attention?" A poke to his cheek and Kaneki was drawn out of his straying state.
"Wha-oh yeah, sorry…" His glance was cast downward again to the porcelain mug once more. Only one of his orbs was visible, the other concealed by a white medical patch, hiding the secret he didn't want to ever share.
"Anyways, about that cute girl who gave me her number at the park," Hide's chatter was tuned out once more as the half-ghoul absentmindedly brushed his fingers across the thin fabric of the patch.
OoO
Sclera black as spilt oil and iris a shining red beacon in the sea of darkness, his lip quivered as briny tears of denial streaked his face.
"Hide…" His mind wasn't in the correct realm as he envisioned his best friend substituted for a steak fillet, delicious and tantalizing. He struggled to make sense of the hallucination in his brain and the urge to devour.
AN: Wow, I actually posted something on my own free will! (*cough* Instead of being threatened by my friends to do it *cough*) I feel like I used the word 'other' way too much but oh well. I will be continuing this, into how many chapters I'm not sure yet. Feedback and reviews are greatly appreciated! (ノヮ)ノ*:・゚
Fun fact of the day: After I finished writing this I realized I had been writing it with Kaneki's eyes being brown and then I proceeded to face palm so hard I'll most likely need plastic surgery to right the lasting damage in the future.
